AFRICAN EXAMINER) \u2013\u00a0 Reuters\/NAN) Paris St Germain retained the Champions League title by beating Arsenal 4-3 on penalties on\u00a0 Saturday after the game\u00a0 ended 1-1 after extra time, cementing the French side\u2019s \u200bstatus among Europe\u2019s modern greats.<\/span><\/p>\n

Arsenal defender Gabriel blasted his spot kick over Matvey Safonov\u2019s crossbar at the Puskas Arena, his miss confirming PSG as the first club to retain \u200cthe trophy since Real Madrid completed their three-year reign from 2016 to 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n

The game played at the Puskas Arena in Budapest, Hungary saw Arsenal taking the lead in the\u00a0 sixth minute\u00a0 through Kai Havertz. The German \u00a0 lashed on a shot past PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov.<\/span><\/p>\n

PSG found it difficult to get an equalizer as Arsenal\u2019s defence remain rock-solid.<\/span><\/p>\n

But the defending champions where gifted the equalizer when Cristhian Mosquera fouled Khvicha Kvaratskelia in the box. Ousmane Dembele buried the resulting penalty in the 65 minute.<\/span><\/p>\n

Both teams couldn\u2019t find the winner for the rest of the 90 minutes and 30 minutes of extra time, leading the tie to penalty shootout.<\/span><\/p>\n

PSG came out top in the shootouts with only Nuno Mendez failing to score , while Eze and Gabriel missed their kicks for Arsenal.<\/span><\/p>\n
