Fundstrat\u2019s Tom Lee pushed back on the growing consensus that this week\u2019s Fed meeting was hawkish. He argued investors misjudged new Fed Chair Kevin Warsh\u2019s communication style and intentions.<\/p>\n

\u201cKevin Warsh has a very different communication style and he plans to kind of modernize how the Fed monitors data,\u201d Lee said. <\/a>\u201cI think the markets took the removal of that forward guidance and even looking at those dot plots as a hawkish pivot. But I think instead I think it\u2019s Kevin Warsh saying, listen, I\u2019m going to be using modern data, real-time alternative data to understand what\u2019s going on with inflation, and at this moment we have no conviction.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that the real takeaway for investors is how reactive the Fed\u2019s projections could now be. \u201cI think the homework now is for investors to understand that if data changes, those dots are going to move pretty quickly. So overall, it\u2019s actually quite a dovish meeting.\u201d<\/p>\n

S&P 500 Holds at 7500 Despite Mixed Signals<\/strong><\/p>\n

The S&P 500 currently sits at 7500. Lee was asked whether the market\u2019s hawkish interpretation changed his outlook on a potential correction later this year.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe still believe later this year there is going to be an abrupt change of market conditions, one that feels very much like a bear market,\u201d Lee said. \u201cBut we don\u2019t want to stand and call a top. I think conditions are still favorable for stocks.\u201d<\/p>\n

He pointed to the SpaceX IPO as a sign of strength, noting its small float of $90 billion and a steady stream of positive news from the company.<\/p>\n

Four Catalysts Lee Is Watching for a Market Shift<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lee laid out specific reasons he expects turbulence later in the year rather than now.<\/p>\n

First, he flagged the Fed\u2019s restructuring into five task forces, which he expects to play out in 2026. Second, he pointed to upcoming IPO share unlocks from Anthropic, and OpenAI later this year. Third, he raised concerns about supply chain disruptions tied to the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the fourth catalyst is that speculative firepower runs out,\u201d Lee said. \u201cThat will happen when some things like margin debt experience levels that are associated with short-term corrections. Or it could be that you could see a lot of cash move off the sidelines, but I don\u2019t have any sense that investors are that bullish yet. So to me, I don\u2019t think that fourth piece is in place yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
