Meanwhile, Howard has signed on to direct the movie and will produce alongside Grazer, Plus, writers <\/span><strong>Alec Berg<\/strong><span>, <\/span><strong>Jeff Schaffer <\/strong><span>and<\/span><strong> David Mandel<\/strong><span>\u2014who wrote the 2003 Seuss movie <\/span><em><span>The Cat in the Hat<\/span><\/em><span>\u2014will pen the script.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It\u2019s unclear if <\/span><strong>Taylor Momsen<\/strong><span>\u2014who played Cindy Lou Who as a child before starring on <\/span><em><span>Gossip Girl<\/span><\/em><span>\u2014will return.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>After its release in November 2000, the <\/span><em><span>Grinch <\/span><\/em><span>film became the highest grossing domestic movie of the year and earned the 2001 Oscar for Best Makeup.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But while the Academy may have been pleased with Carrey\u2019s costuming as the green-haired menace of Whoville, the actor had quite a different experience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"segment-text-only\">\n<p><span>\u201cThe suit was made of unnervingly itchy yak hair that drove me insane all day long,\u201d he told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/article\/how-the-grinch-stole-christmas-oral-history.html\"><em><span>Vulture<\/span><\/em><\/a><span> in December. \u201cI had ten-inch-long fingers, so I couldn\u2019t scratch myself or touch my face or do anything. I had teeth that I had to find a way to speak around, and I had full contact lenses that covered the entire eyeball, and I could only see a tiny tunnel in front of me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Carrey\u2019s discomfort was so intense that he actually considered quitting the project. However, the production ended up hiring <\/span><strong>Richard Marcinko<\/strong><span>, who the <\/span><em><span>Liar, Liar<\/span><\/em><span> actor described as \u201ca gentleman that trained CIA officers and special-ops people how to endure torture.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<section>\n<p><span data-hook=\"thumb\"><\/span><span data-hook=\"adp-photo-agency\">Getty Images<\/span><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<div data-testid=\"segment-text-only\">\n<p><span>\u201cHe gave me a litany of things that I could do when I began to spiral,\u201d he explained. \u201cLike punch myself in the leg as hard as I can. Have a friend that I trust and punch him in the arm. Eat everything in sight.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>One piece of advice Carrey took was to \u201csmoke cigarettes as much as possible.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThere are pictures of me as the Grinch sitting in a director\u2019s chair with a long cigarette holder,\u201d he continued. \u201cI had to have the holder, because the yak hair would catch on fire if it got too close.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As for how Carrey ultimately survived the filming process, though?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWhat really helped me through the makeup process, which they eventually pulled down to about three hours, was the <\/span><strong>Bee Gees<\/strong><span>,\u201d he said. \u201cI listened through the makeup process to the entire Bee Gees catalogue. Their music is so joyful. And then he&#8217;d drop that and turn back to her and be the Grinch for a whole minute of Grinchiness, including the big grin, and she was totally enthralled. He made a videotape of himself making a Grinch face, and it looked great, but just painting him green and giving him a wig doesn\u2019t make him a Grinch. He started to realize that, and he agreed that our approach was more the right way to do it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So, after trying at least half a dozen iterations of Grinchdom, less than a week before shooting was due to start they went back to Hiro&#8217;s initial design.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure data-testid=\"adp-vgallery-item\">\n<div data-testid=\"adp-vgallery-img\">\n<p><span data-hook=\"thumb\"><\/span><span data-hook=\"adp-photo-agency\">Ron Batzdorff\/Universal\/THA\/Shutterstock<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><figcaption>\n<div data-testid=\"adp-vgallery-title\">\n<h2>Entertainment <\/p>\n<p>Suffering for Their Success<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"segment-text-only\">\n<p>&#8220;An average day started at 5 or 6 in the morning,&#8221; Hiro recalled, estimating he worked on Carrey four days a week for three months. &#8220;The makeup time itself was fairly short, about two hours and 10 minutes. With the help of my makeup assistant, <strong>Amy Schmiederer<\/strong>, I tried to work as quickly as possible because we didn\u2019t want Jim to sit in the chair for a long time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He continued, &#8220;There were three major steps in the makeup: to apply the foam rubber pieces on his face that covered almost everything but his lower lip and chin; to paint on the color and to put on the hairpieces and the wig. After each step, Jim would have a break of 10 to 30 minutes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Keeping the makeup intact for the rest of the day was the real challenge, Hari shared, &#8220;because movement and sweating will affect how well the makeup stays on his face.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Carrey &#8220;was constantly moving around so there was constant touch-up on the set,&#8221; Hari said. &#8220;But once Jim starts a scene, he wants to keep going and do it again and again and again. Every shot he did, he tried at least three times or more to come up with something better, and during that time he didn\u2019t want to be touched up.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The artist wore a tool belt packed with supplies\u2014makeup designer and supervisor <strong>Rick Baker<\/strong> estimated it weighed 100 pounds\u2014so he could keep up with the star.<\/p>\n<p>Baker and key hairstylist <strong>Gail Rowell-Ryan\u00a0<\/strong>ended up winning the Oscar in 2001 for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure data-testid=\"adp-vgallery-item\">\n<div data-testid=\"adp-vgallery-img\">\n<p><span data-hook=\"thumb\"><\/span><span data-hook=\"adp-photo-agency\">Ron Batzdorff\/Universal\/THA\/Shutterstock<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><figcaption>\n<div data-testid=\"adp-vgallery-title\">\n<h2>Entertainment <\/p>\n<p>Barely Stayin&#8217; Alive<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"segment-text-only\">\n<p>Time did\u00a0<em>not<\/em> make Carrey&#8217;s heart grow fonder for the Grinch costume.<\/p>\n<p>Getting into full makeup on day one took eight and a half hours, he recalled on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=kXAv8RXmsrc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Graham Norton Show<\/em> in 2014<\/a>, comparing it to &#8220;being buried alive.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So, he continued, &#8220;I went back to my trailer and put my leg through the wall, and I told Ron Howard I couldn&#8217;t do the movie. Then [producer] <strong>Brian Grazer<\/strong> came in and, being the fix-it man, came up with a brilliant idea, which was to hire a gentleman who is trained to teach CIA operatives how to do endure torture.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The advice, Carrey recalled, was to &#8220;eat everything you see and if you&#8217;re freaking out and you start to spiral downward, turn the television on, change a pattern, have someone you know come up and smack you in the head. But on Saturday, I was thinking: &#8216;Maybe he\u2019ll forget to bring it back, and that will mess up my rhythm with the makeup.&#8217; I went out and bought the same CD and brought it into the makeup trailer the next week.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Which was good thinking, he said, because Carrey <em>did <\/em>forget to bring the CD back.<\/p>\n<p>Carrey later autographed Hiro&#8217;s copy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure data-testid=\"adp-vgallery-item\">\n<div data-testid=\"adp-vgallery-img\">\n<p><span data-hook=\"thumb\"><\/span><span data-hook=\"adp-photo-agency\">Universal\/Getty Images<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><figcaption>\n<div data-testid=\"adp-vgallery-title\">\n<h2>Entertainment <\/p>\n<p>Rough From Day One<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"segment-text-only\">\n<p>On the day Carrey recalled putting his leg through the wall, Hiro felt the tension in the air.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Every first day has some kind of problem that you have to deal with, but this was actually the first time we tried the final design on Jim, and we were not sure if he would like it or not,&#8221; he told the\u00a0<em>LA Times<\/em>. &#8220;I was nervous, and Jim was nervous, too. As it turned out, he didn\u2019t like the way his neck was covered with the hair, which was part of the wig, so we had to fix it right on the set, which meant we couldn\u2019t start the shooting right away.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And, he added, &#8220;Jim is a perfectionist, and every time there was a change, he said something.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure data-testid=\"adp-vgallery-item\">\n<div data-testid=\"adp-vgallery-img\">\n<p><span data-hook=\"thumb\"><\/span><span data-hook=\"adp-photo-agency\">Universal<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><figcaption>\n<div data-testid=\"adp-vgallery-title\">\n<h2>Entertainment <\/p>\n<p>Flying Blind<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"segment-text-only\">\n<p>&#8220;The biggest problem with the makeup for Jim was the contact lenses,&#8221; Hiro said. &#8220;They were using fake snow on the set, which was actually dried, smashed paper pulp, and on the set there were always tiny particles flying around in the air. The dust actually went between the lenses and his eyes, so he had a painful time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Howard said Carrey was a guy who really couldn&#8217;t wear contacts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But he had to, because he knew it was right for the character,&#8221; the director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.empireonline.com\/movies\/features\/how-the-grinch-stole-christmas-jim-carrey-ron-howard-painful-making-festive-fable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told <em>Empire<\/em><\/a>. &#8220;But there were days when we had an optometrist standing by all the time with a super magnifying glass because he always got stuff in his eyes, and then we were told he couldn&#8217;t film.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While Carrey&#8217;s bare brown eyes really were aching to be uncovered, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/1359006\/you-mightve-missed-this-how-the-grinch-stole-christmas-editing-error?query=how%20the%20grinch%20stole%20christmas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">editing oversight<\/a> that went viral in 2022 left one frame in which the Grinch is finding out that Whoville is still awash in Christmas spirit despite his best efforts\u2014and the actor&#8217;s contact-less eyes are showing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure data-testid=\"adp-vgallery-item\">\n<div data-testid=\"adp-vgallery-img\">\n<p><span data-hook=\"thumb\"><\/span><span data-hook=\"adp-photo-agency\">Moviestore Collection\/Shutterstock<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><figcaption>\n<div data-testid=\"adp-vgallery-title\">\n<h2>Entertainment <\/p>\n<p>Bah, Humbug<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;It was a real lesson in Zen,&#8221; Carrey told the <em>Times <\/em>of dealing with the discomfort. &#8220;Every once in a while it would be very funny because they would know I was having a problem, because I would punch myself in the leg. I learned about pain deferment\u2014you pinch your leg or your arm, and take the focus out of your discomfort. It was tough the first couple of weeks, but I was able to transcend it. Then he would go back to his trailer for a break, during which he would start peeling the makeup pieces off himself.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Carrey preserved pieces of the foam rubber he pulled off his face in a plastic bag with the day&#8217;s call sheet and gave them to people on set to keep as souvenirs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure data-testid=\"adp-vgallery-item\">\n<div data-testid=\"adp-vgallery-img\">\n<p><span data-hook=\"thumb\"><\/span><span data-hook=\"adp-photo-agency\">Matt Petit\/A.M.P.A.S via Getty Images<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><figcaption>\n<div data-testid=\"adp-vgallery-title\">\n<h2>Entertainment <\/p>\n<p>It Was No Picnic for Me Either, Pal<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"segment-text-only\">\n<p>At the time, Hiro said all was well that ended well.<\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;About two months after the filming was completed, Jim and I talked again,&#8221; he told the <em>Times<\/em><em>.<\/em> &#8220;He said he admired me, and told me I did a great job and said thanks. I thanked him too, because he went through that whole thing. I think <em>How the Grinch Stole Christmas<\/em> was the hardest film I&#8217;ve ever worked on. It is a good memory, but if we had to do that again&#8230;we won\u2019t do it!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As it turned out, Hiro\u2014who&#8217;s won two Oscars since, for 2017&#8217;s<em>\u00a0Darkest<\/em> <em>Hour <\/em>and 2019&#8217;s <em>Bombshell\u2014<\/em>started therapy after his experience on\u00a0<em>HTGSC<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>It got bad enough, Hiro <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/2017\/12\/kazuhiro-tsuji-gary-oldman-darkest-hour.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told Vulture<\/a> in 2018, that a producer suggested he leave to show Carrey how essential he was to the production. (The film&#8217;s makeup department was <em>huge<\/em>, but among the credits Hiro is the only one dedicated to the Grinch.)<\/p>\n<p>He didn&#8217;t answer when Carrey called after a week, Hiro said, but Howard assured him the actor had sworn to change his ways.<\/p>\n<p>While his friends encouraged him to ask for a big raise, the Kyoto-born artist continued, he decided he&#8217;d ask the studio for help getting a green card instead.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It worked, and he&#8217;s since become an American citizen. If there&#8217;s maybe some kind of stunt you could pull, wear the make-up, let people know that you know it&#8217;s tough,'&#8221; Howard told\u00a0<em>Empire<\/em>. So, one day, &#8220;I slipped into the make-up chair at about 3:30 a.m. in the morning and donned the costume, and shocked Jim, and got a real cheap laugh out of the crew, and I think people appreciated that I was willing to endure at least one day.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But he did\u00a0<em>not<\/em> suffer the contacts. One, because it wasn&#8217;t worth the expense to have a pair custom-made for one day, Howard said, but also, &#8220;frankly, I didn&#8217;t want to wear the damn things.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure data-testid=\"adp-vgallery-item\">\n<div data-testid=\"adp-vgallery-img\">\n<p><span data-hook=\"thumb\"><\/span><span data-hook=\"adp-photo-agency\">Ron Batzdorff\/Universal\/THA\/Shutterstock<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><figcaption>\n<div data-testid=\"adp-vgallery-title\">\n<h2>Entertainment <\/p>\n<p>Mayberry S.O.S.<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"segment-text-only\">\n<p>Carrey was &#8220;having panic attacks&#8221; and &#8220;breathing into a paper bag&#8221; due to the claustrophobia he felt in the suit, Howard recalled, so the director was frequently trying to cheer the star up. (Before he was able to show Carrey the $350 million in worldwide box office receipts.)<\/p>\n<p>Knowing the actor was a huge fan of <strong>Don Knotts<\/strong>, who played Barney Fife on\u00a0<em>The Andy Griffith Show<\/em>, Howard\u2014who got his start as a child actor on the 1950s-era sitcom\u2014had his former costar visit the set.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I wish I&#8217;d had the camera rolling,&#8221; Howard said on\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YAtsAmYtGHI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In Depth With Graham Bensinger<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>in 2023, to capture &#8220;genius impressionist&#8221; Carrey doing &#8220;a perfect Don Knotts, in the Grinch costume.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Overall, Howard &#8220;understood the kind of agony [Carrey] was going through,&#8221; he said. It\u2019s about family and love and acceptance.
