Bunia, Democratic Republic of the Congo\u2014<\/strong>Four nurses who were being treated for Ebola\u00a0disease caused by\u00a0Bundibugyo\u00a0virus have\u00a0been\u00a0discharged from a hospital in Bunia, the capital of\u00a0Ituri,\u00a0after recovering from the disease. More recoveries are expected,\u00a0especially when people are diagnosed early and able to access care, and as\u00a0outbreak response\u00a0intensifies. \u00a0<\/p>\n

The\u00a0health workers had been caring for people\u00a0sick\u00a0with Ebola\u00a0at their facility earlier in May.\u00a0In\u00a0total, five people have now\u00a0recovered\u00a0from the virus. A laboratory worker had also recovered earlier on 28 May. \u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a victory worth celebrating.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0a strong message that it is possible to recover from Ebola when seeking care early in a dedicated health facility,\u201d said Dr Dieudonne Mwamba Kazadi, the Director-General of the country\u2019s National Institute of Public Health. \u00a0<\/p>\n

To help reinforce clinical\u00a0care,\u00a0the\u00a0World Health Organization (WHO)\u00a0handed over a refurbished Ebola Treatment Centre\u00a0in Bunia\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0health authorities. The facility has\u00a0an initial\u00a0capacity of 24 beds but can be expanded\u00a0to 60\u00a0beds. WHO is also setting up an annex to the facility with up to 42 beds to be ready in the coming weeks. \u00a0<\/p>\n

As of 31 May,\u00a0there\u00a0were\u00a0210\u00a0confirmed\u00a0cases\u00a0reported\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0country,\u00a0with 17\u00a0confirmed\u00a0deaths.\u00a0349 suspected\u00a0cases are\u00a0under\u00a0investigations.\u00a0In\u00a0total, 16 health workers have been reported sick with Ebola during this outbreak.<\/p>\n

WHO Director-General,\u00a0Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, while on a visit to Bunia\u00a0on 30\u00a0May,\u00a0pointed out that although there were currently no licensed vaccine or treatment for Bundibugyo virus\u00a0\u201cit is not without hope. Ebola caused by the Bundibugyo virus can be survived with good medical care, and some people here in\u00a0Ituri\u00a0have already recovered. Seeking care early makes a real difference.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n

Earlier\u00a0this week, WHO advisory groups\u00a0announced\u00a0that several\u00a0candidate treatments\u00a0and\u00a0vaccines\u00a0are promising enough to\u00a0warrant\u00a0prioritization for evaluation in clinical trials. WHO is now working closely with the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda to\u00a0facilitate\u00a0the implementation of research evaluation of these products.<\/p>\n

Since\u00a0the\u00a0declaration of\u00a0the\u00a0Ebola\u00a0outbreak\u00a0on 15 May, the Democratic Republic of the Congo,\u00a0with support\u00a0from WHO\u00a0and partners,\u00a0has implemented key response measures,\u00a0ranging from laboratory testing, disease surveillance, infection prevention and control to community engagement,\u00a0and\u00a0resource\u00a0mobilization.<\/p>\n

WHO is committed to ensuring\u00a0that\u00a0other\u00a0essential health services and humanitarian assistance continue to be provided to communities across\u00a0Ituri\u00a0and beyond,\u00a0and that what is implemented during this response will\u00a0benefit\u00a0the communities long after the\u00a0outbreak\u00a0is over.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
