{"id":912776,"date":"2026-06-14T16:12:54","date_gmt":"2026-06-14T21:12:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2026\/06\/14\/cannes-2026-what-to-watch-for-ahead-of-the-palme-dor-ceremony\/"},"modified":"2026-06-14T16:12:54","modified_gmt":"2026-06-14T21:12:54","slug":"cannes-2026-what-to-watch-for-ahead-of-the-palme-dor-ceremony","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2026\/06\/14\/cannes-2026-what-to-watch-for-ahead-of-the-palme-dor-ceremony\/","title":{"rendered":"Cannes 2026: What to watch for ahead of the Palme d&#8217;Or ceremony"},"content":{"rendered":"<div xmlns:xlink=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xlink\">\n<p>Cristian Mungiu\u2019s Norway-set drama about political polarization, \u201cFjord,\u201d has won the Palme d\u2019Or, handing the <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/cannes-film-festival\">Cannes Film Festival<\/a><\/span> \u2019s top honor for the second time to Mungiu, the Romanian director of \u201c4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At a 79th Cannes Film Festival that saw few films cause a stir, \u201cFjord\u201d found wide admiration for its engrossing tale of what Mungiu called \u201cleft-wing fundamentalism.\u201d It stars <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/sebastian-stan\">Sebastian Stan<\/a><\/span> and Renate Reinsve as Romanian Evangelicals who move to Norway, but soon after have their children taken from them by child services for spanking them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday the society is split. It\u2019s divided. It\u2019s radicalized,\u201d said Mungiu. \u201cThis film is a pledge against any type of fundamentalism. It\u2019s a pledge for these things we quote very often, like trauma and inclusion and empathy. These are lovely words but we need to apply them more often.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mungiu becomes just the 10th filmmaker to win the Palme d\u2019Or twice. His \u201c4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days,\u201d a Romanian abortion drama, won the award in 2007.<\/p>\n<p>The win for \u201cFjord\u201d extends <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/neon-cannes-palme-dor-ff279fcced34688a8a036b5bd95d4de0\">one of the movies\u2019 most extraordinary streaks<\/a><\/span>. Loosely based on Claude Chabrol\u2019s 1969 film \u201cThe Unfaithful Wife,\u201d \u201cMinotaur\u201d is about a Russian businessman suspicious of his wife\u2019s indiscretions. At the same time, he\u2019s tasked with conscripting 150 of his workers for Vladimir Putin\u2019s war machine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe only person who can stop this butchery is you, Mr. President of the Russian Federation,\u201d Zvyagintsev said, accepting his award. \u201cPut an end to this slaughter. The whole world is waiting for this.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>By wide consensus, it wasn\u2019t a banner festival. Hollywood <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/cannes-film-festival-france-palme-dor-hollywood-65ab7507c8f80cb134e1ebbff7acf910\">largely sat out<\/a><\/span> this year\u2019s edition. Many of the selections struggled to bowl over critics. The global buzz that Cannes typically generates was fitful at best.<\/p>\n<p>But the awards handed out Saturday as the 79th Cannes drew to a close will significantly raise the international profiles of the winners. Last year\u2019s Cannes produced a long string of Oscar nominees, including <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/oscars-2026-best-international-film-ac9d608fec5a03ecbe2d0a0b67b44bbd\">\u201cSentimental Value\u201d<\/a><\/span> and <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/secret-agent-movie-review-52254d76594ee056c333df711962bb72\">\u201cThe Secret Agent.\u201d<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The nine-member jury that decided the awards was headed by Korean filmmaker <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/cannes-film-festival-2026-jury-president-e3d578a54a89c6d22c37b57be5e0c04c\">Park Chan-wook<\/a><\/span>. Demi Moore, Chlo\u00e9 Zhao and Stellan Skarsg\u00e5rd were also jurors. (AP Photo\/John Locher)<\/p>\n<p>                        <\/bsp-carousel-read-more>\n                    <\/div>\n<p>    <\/template><\/p>\n<p><\/bsp-figure><\/p><\/div>\n<h2>Awards are split and shared <\/h2>\n<p>Two films won for best director: the Polish filmmaker Pawel Pawlikowski, for his postwar drama <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/sandra-huller-fatherland-cannes-3bab5df44f9700a12c0c1255b5480f01\">\u201cFatherland,\u201d<\/a><\/span> and the Spanish creative duo Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo for \u201cThe Black Ball,\u201d a generation-spanning queer epic \u201cThe Black Ball.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was Pawlikowski\u2019s second time winning the same Cannes prize in as many films, following his \u201cCold War\u201d in 2018. But the award marked a breakthrough for Ambrossi and Calvo in their first Cannes entry. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one knew us. Thierry didn\u2019t know us,\u201d Ambrossi told reporters, referring to Thierry Fremaux, Cannes artistic director. \u201cIt was just that the movie spoke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Virginie Efira and Tao Okamoto, the two stars of <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/cannes-ryusuke-hamaguchi-fd345b6d2ca89bfd8a00f704a624184d\">Ryusuke Hamaguchi\u2019s \u201cAll of a Sudden\u201d<\/a><\/span> shared the best actress award. They chose Emmanuel Macchia and Valentin Campagne, the two stars of \u201cCoward,\u201d Lukas Dhont\u2019s drama about young Belgian men sent to the front lines of World War II.<\/p>\n<p>The prize for best screenplay was awarded to Emmanuel Marre for \u201cA Man of His Time,\u201d a French drama about a Nazi collaborator in Vichy France. Marre based it on the experiences of his own great-grandfather.<\/p>\n<p>The jury prize, or third place, went to German filmmaker Valeska Grisebach\u2019s \u201cThe Dreamed Adventure,\u201d a crime drama set in a Bulgarian border town. <\/p>\n<p>Saturday\u2019s ceremony was missing its tribute honoree. Barbra Streisand was to receive an honorary Palme d\u2019Or, but a knee injury <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/cannes-barbra-streisand-palme-dor-a776dc8a7c118bac81b8f56da46f39e5\">prevented her from attending<\/a><\/span>.
