This is the 17th. That history gives me real confidence,\u201d Tedros said during a news conference Saturday alongside Congo\u2019s health minister. <\/p>\n<p>The health organization said Friday latest official figures showed 906 suspected cases and 223 suspected deaths. Neighboring Uganda has confirmed nine cases and one death, the Ugandan Health Ministry said Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ebola-bundibugyo-virus-outbreak-congo-baf5f9861a896ca027a9e40524d42e74\">Bundibugyo virus<\/a><\/span>, the current species of Ebola, has no approved treatment or vaccine.<\/p>\n<p><span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/congo-ebola-aid-bunia-who-tedros-acac5c8afc134cf1d6c81e680247ff6b\">Medical aid donated by the European Union arrived<\/a><\/span> in Bunia in Ituri province on Thursday. More shipments are expected in the coming days. The U.S. announced $80 million in additional aid on the same day, bringing its total commitment to more than $112 million.<\/p>\n<p>Response efforts at Bunia\u2019s Rwampara and General hospitals appeared more organized, with additional staff, protective gear and medical supplies, though patients continue arriving around the clock, according to an Associated Press reporter. <\/p>\n<p>The response has not kept pace with one of the fastest-spreading outbreaks on record, Doctors Without Borders, or MSF, warned on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNever before has an Ebola outbreak recorded so many cases so soon after its declaration,\u201d Dr. Alan Gonzalez, MSF\u2019s deputy director of operations, said in a statement. \u201cNobody knows the true scale and severity of this outbreak.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Gonzalez called for an immediate expansion of testing, faster deployment of aid workers and sustained access for medical supplies.<\/p>\n<p>The <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/congo-ebola-health-workers-risk-c43442fbc75ca31dfa948f08f9731526\">dangers faced<\/a><\/span> by health workers have been heightened by anger among residents over the stringent medical protocols for handling the victims\u2019 bodies, which clash with local burial rites. Residents have launched at least <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/congo-ebola-outbreak-who-spread-response-18537353976a958687e55f95434c918c\">three attacks<\/a><\/span> against health centers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are not here to tell people what to do, we are here to listen,\u201d Tedros said Saturday. \u201cBuilding trust takes time, and it starts with listening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand how painful it is to lose someone, and how much it means to honor them properly, but certain practices, including touching the bodies of those who have died from Ebola, can spread the virus further,\u201d Tedros said. <\/p>\n<p>Attacks in Ituri by the Allied Democratic Forces, a rebel group allied with the Islamic State group, and a coalition of ethnic militias have also hindered the response. The illness also has been reported in the Congolese provinces of North Kivu and South Kivu, south of Ituri, where the Rwanda-backed M23 rebel group controls many key cities, including Goma and Bukavu. The rebels have reported two cases.<\/p>\n<p>Uganda and Rwanda have closed their borders, while the Trump administration last week banned entry of non-U.S. passport holders who had recently visited Congo, Uganda or South Sudan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would also ask countries that have imposed travel bans or border closures to reconsider,\u201d Tedros said, saying such measures \u201cdiscourage the transparency that saves lives.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u2014\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Banchereau reported from Dakar, Senegal.
