{"id":909615,"date":"2026-06-01T05:12:16","date_gmt":"2026-06-01T10:12:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2026\/06\/01\/chicago-bears-top-breakout-candidate-already-confirmed-by-ben-johnson\/"},"modified":"2026-06-01T05:12:16","modified_gmt":"2026-06-01T10:12:16","slug":"chicago-bears-top-breakout-candidate-already-confirmed-by-ben-johnson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2026\/06\/01\/chicago-bears-top-breakout-candidate-already-confirmed-by-ben-johnson\/","title":{"rendered":"Chicago Bears&#8217; Top Breakout Candidate Already Confirmed By Ben Johnson"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Football <\/p>\n<div q:key=\"QW_9\">\n<p id=\"inline-text-0\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6y\">The Chicago Bears have a good amount of young talent on their 2026 roster, which means the team has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/bears\/onsi\/chicago-bears-breakout-players-2026\" target=\"_blank\">no shortage of breakout candidates<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"71\">With so many to choose from, Pro Football &#038; Sports Network&#8217;s Jacob Infante <a href=\"https:\/\/www.profootballnetwork.com\/nfl-breakout-candidates-all-32-teams\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">went with wide receiver Luther Burden<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-2\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"74\">Infante even went as far as to say Burden could emerge as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/bears\/onsi\/depth-chart-roster-draft-2026-otas\" target=\"_blank\">Bears&#8217; top wide receiver<\/a> over Rome Odunze.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-3\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"77\">&#8220;An advanced analytical darling in 2025, Luther Burden III was an extremely efficient receiver for the Chicago Bears, notably leading all rookie wide receivers with an 83.8 PFSN WR Impact Score,&#8221; he wrote.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-4\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7a\">&#8220;He was on a 1,000-yard pace in the final eight games of the year, overcoming a slow start to the season to solidify himself as an impact receiver,&#8221; Infante added. &#8220;He has the chance to break out as the Bears\u2019 WR1 in 2026.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"inline-text-5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7d\">Ben Johnson agrees on Luther Burden&#8217;s breakout candidacy<\/h2>\n<figure q:key=\"9m_3\" q:id=\"7l\">\n<p><figcaption q:id=\"7o\">Detroit Lions cornerback D.J. Reed and Chicago Bears wide receiver Luther Burden III. | Junfu Han \/ USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images<\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p id=\"inline-text-7\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7r\">All offseason long, head coach Ben Johnson has told us Burden is a breakout candidate without directly saying those words.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-8\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7u\">Johnson started <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/bears\/onsi\/news\/ben-johnson-fires-second-year-hype-train-chicago-bears-2025-draft-pick\" target=\"_blank\">firing up the Luther Burden hype train<\/a> while at the NFL league meeting in March.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-9\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7x\">&#8220;He&#8217;s exactly what we thought we were getting out of the draft last year,&#8221; he said of Burden, per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagobears.com\/news\/5-things-we-learned-from-ben-johnson-at-owners-meetings-2026\" target=\"_blank\">Larry Mayer of ChicagoBears.com<\/a>. &#8220;This guy is a dynamic playmaker. He&#8217;s got some of the best run-after-the-catch in the game right now. I really believe that. We&#8217;ve got to continue to get the ball in his hands as often as we possibly can.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-10\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"80\">&#8220;What I&#8217;ve grown to love about him is this guy loves football. He&#8217;s been in all offseason. He&#8217;s been lifting weights with our strength staff. He&#8217;s really, really excited to get a full offseason going and look to develop a bigger route tree,&#8221; Johnson added.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-11\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"83\">Then, during OTAs last week, Johnson was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/bears\/onsi\/luther-burden-deliver-hype-ben-johnson-build-bears-otas\" target=\"_blank\">once again effusive in his praise<\/a> for the second-year wideout.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-12\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"86\">\u201cI\u2019m buying Luther Burden stock right now,&#8221; Johnson said, per\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BradBiggs\/status\/2060040773639324020\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune<\/a>. \u201cHe\u2019s been extremely coachable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-13\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"89\">&#8220;He looks like he is moving at a different speed right now. He is not thinking as much. The game is slowing down for him,&#8221; Johnson added, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CHGO_Bears\/status\/2060041006230220876\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">CHGO Bears<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-14\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8c\">If a great offensive mine and head coach like Johnson is buying Burden stock, we are, too.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"inline-text-15\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8f\">Can Luther Burden challenge Rome Odunze for WR1?<\/h2>\n<figure q:key=\"9m_3\" q:id=\"8n\">\n<p><figcaption q:id=\"8q\">Chicago Bears wide receiver Rome Odunze. | David Banks-Imagn Images<\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p id=\"inline-text-17\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8t\">Infante doesn&#8217;t just think Burden is a breakout candidate, he also believes Burden could become Chicago&#8217;s WR1.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-18\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8w\">That&#8217;s certainly not impossible considering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/bears\/onsi\/news\/do-the-chicago-bears-have-a-rome-odunze-problem\" target=\"_blank\">the jury is still out on Odunze<\/a> much like it is Burden.
