\n\tTalley, who was born on Jan. 27, 1946, formed the girl group with her cousins \u2014 lead singer Veronica Bennett (who later was known as Ronnie Spector) and her older sister Estelle Bennett \u2014\u00a0with whom she\u2019d been singing since they were in their teens. First known as the Darling Sisters, they signed with Colpix Records in 1961.<\/p>\n
\n\tTwo years later, the auditioned for Phil Spector, known for his big brass-and-drum style, which was called the \u201cwall of sound.\u201d He signed them to his Philles Records, which was when they changed their name to the Ronettes. After being signed, they sang backup for other acts. until Spector had the group record \u201cBe My Baby\u201d and \u201cBaby, I Love You.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tThe group\u2019s debut album, Presenting the\u00a0Fabulous Ronettes<\/em>, was released in 1964 and produced five songs that made it to the U.S. Billboard charts. The group would have several hit singles, including\u00a0 \u201cWalking in the Rain,\u201d \u201cI Can Hear Music,\u201d \u201c(The Best Part of) Breaking Up\u201d and \u201cDo I Love You.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\tThey went on to tour with opening act the Rolling Stones in 1964 and then opened for the Beatles on that group\u2019s last world tour in 1966. The Ronettes also toured Europe in 1967.<\/p>\n
\n\tThat same year, Talley married Scott Ross, a radio and TV personality. That\u2019s also the same year that the group broke up \u2014 reportedly in part thanks to Phil Spector, with whom Ronnie had a famously abusive and controlling relationship, as she detailed in her memoir, Be My Baby. <\/em>But Talley also has said she was ready to leave the group to focus on making Christian music, which she admitted in an interview was not a popular choice at the time.<\/p>\n\n\t\u201cIn 1966, there was nobody in the rock \u2018n\u2019 roll world who was talking about Jesus,\u201d she told Christian Broadcasting Network. \u201cToday you are constantly hearing that this one knows the Lord, or that one knows the Lord. So I went back and found nobody who would stand with me as another Christian in the music business. There were none. Nobody was making Christian music. No one was saying, \u2018I want to sing for the Lord.\u2019 So it was like I was just out there very much by myself.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tShe went on to record several Christian songs after leaving the Ronettes. The group was inducted into the\u00a0Rock and Roll Hall of Fame\u00a0in 2007.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\tTalley Ross and her husband had four children together. He died in 2023.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\tEstelle Bennett died in 2009, while Ronnie Spector died in 2022.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
