The last time Nigeria missed\u00a0the\u00a0AFCON tournaments was in\u00a02017,\u00a0while their last\u00a0triumph\u00a0came at the 2013 edition in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>The West African giants have\u00a0finished second and third respectively in the last two editions\u00a0and\u00a0impressed at the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, going unbeaten in normal time before losing on penalties to the hosts in the semifinal.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1080\" height=\"720\" src=\"https:\/\/soccernet.ng\/thumbor\/z3Vn1kbrOxHKzQvWwEnv7Xg3C1I=\/1080x720\/smart\/https%3A%2F%2Fmedia.soccernet.ng%2Fmain%2F2026%2F05%2F335B9DE2-8731-4A14-A20B-6C76F6E6E233.jpeg\" alt=\"Soccer John Obuh\"><figcaption>John Obuh. Photo Credit\/ X<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Speaking in an interview, John Obuh,\u00a0who led Nigeria\u2019s Golden Eaglets to a silver medal at the 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup, believes that\u00a0the Super Eagles must approach every match with caution and seriousness to ensure qualification.<\/p>\n<p>The former Flying Eagles coach\u00a0also\u00a0praised\u00a0the team\u2019s\u00a0performance at the 2025 AFCON in Morocco but warned against complacency and underestimating\u00a0any of their group opponents.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI will start from their last competition, which was the Nations Cup. We did very well. They brought back hope to us with the way they played, even though we lost out. It was a very good campaign, a very good performance, and there were a lot of positive discoveries\u201d,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/footy-africa.com\/john-obuh-backs-super-eagles-to-qualify-for-2027-afcon-warns-against-complacency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>Obuh said, via Footy-Africa.<\/u><\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cTaking that into this current campaign, I want to believe that as long as they do not underrate those countries\u2014because Madagascar and the rest are no longer small football nations\u2014they will succeed.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cEvery country has experienced some level of development as far as football is concerned. Copyright: Imagoxshengolpixsx<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>However, Obuh believes the federation\u00a0have a very\u00a0important role to play in ensuring the team does not\u00a0struggle during\u00a0its qualification campaign through poor planning or selection.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cAlthough I have not seen the list of invited players, I know the NFF recognises the importance of this qualifier, and I am sure they will not joke with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>Soccer Super Eagles selection should be on merit\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>The Super Eagles are in a period of transition, with many young players expected to be handed opportunities to impress by head coach Eric Chelle.<\/p>\n<p>John\u00a0Obuh believes this current squad have the potential to help Nigeria end its long wait for another AFCON title, but any other addition must be based on merit and their performance for their club side.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI wouldn\u2019t think that their age means they are going to retire at a specific time. There are many of their colleagues playing beyond that age, even in European countries, who are still part of their respective World Cup squads. The most important thing right now is for them to first focus on securing qualification. It is their performance that will keep them in the team. With the way they are progressing, they are the ones we look forward to seeing replace the older players.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cMy wish is for all of them to be part of it because they are young enough to serve us for a longer time. However, they have to perform very well to keep their places, because we need replacements as quickly as possible\u201d, Obuh concluded.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Nigeria will begin their qualification in September, with the\u00a0campaign set to run\u00a0until March 2027, a few months before the tournament.
