One out of three panelists (34%) ranked geopolitical hazards among their <a href=\"https:\/\/nabe.com\/NABE\/Surveys\/Business_Conditions_Surveys\/May-2026-Business-Conditions-Survey-Summary.aspx?_gl=1*ztsalh*_ga*MjA4MDEyMjA4MS4xNzc4NTIzOTk2*_ga_J48PFZK49C*czE3Nzg1MjkyNTckbzIkZzAkdDE3Nzg1MjkyNTckajYwJGwwJGgxMzU3MzM3Njc0\">top three business risks<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>\u201cThere\u2019s a little bit of caution here, a little bit of resilience, but a lot of worry about what\u2019s happening geopolitically and with costs,\u201d National Restaurant Association Chief Economist Chad Moutray said during a webcast, noting steady spending by consumers but a \u201cwait-and-see\u201d posture among businesses. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Dive Insight:<\/h3>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Anxiety about the harm from the Iran war has cropped up in other recent surveys.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Economists see 35% odds of a recession in the next 12 months, an increase from 32% in February and March, according to a Wolters Kluwer survey released on Friday.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>At the same time, 71% of economists believe that higher energy prices will not generate significant or extended pressure on so-called core prices, which exclude food and energy prices, Wolters Kluwer said.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>The jump in the price of oil since February will likely dampen gross domestic product growth, Wolters Kluwer said, citing findings of the survey.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>\u201cHigher energy costs are expected to offset fiscal support, slowing growth below trend for a time,\u201d Wolters Kluwer said.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tradingeconomics.com\/commodity\/brent-crude-oil\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Futures for Brent crude oil<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>, the global benchmark, have rocketed by about 49% since the Feb. 28 start of the war, from $70 per barrel to $104 per barrel.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>\u201cMiddle- and lower-income consumers are really strugglin g now, especially with gasoline at $4.50-something-cents\u201d per gallon, Martha Moore, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span><span><span><span><span>chief economist at the American Chemistry Council, said during the NABE webcast.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>The U.S. economy will likely expand 2% this year, compared with 2.1% last year, and the personal consumption expenditures price index will probably rise 3.4%, well above the Fed\u2019s 2% goal, according to economists surveyed by Wolters Kluwer.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>In the NABE survey, 50% of respondents put the probability of a U.S. recession in the next 12 months at 26% or higher, an increase from 44% of respondents in a January survey.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Also, 44% of respondents said that the Iran war has triggered an increase in input costs for their businesses, according to NABE.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructiondive.com\/news\/iran-war-inflation-crimps-profits-plans-investment-hiring-nabe\/820099\/\" class=\"button purchase\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Read More<\/a><br \/>\n Jim Tyson<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An article from Dive Brief Half of the respondents to a National Association for Business Economics survey put the odds of a U.S. recession in the next 12 months at 26% or higher.
