Trump Education Secretary Linda McMahon<\/strong> gave a startling answer<\/a> when asked by Fox News\u2019s Harris Faulkner<\/strong> how well American kids<\/a> are doing in school.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am excited to have this conversation because you bring so much sunshine to a topic that\u2019s been tough,\u201d Faulkner began. \u201cFirst of all, tell us where we are with what kids are doing just scholastically in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re doing terribly,\u201d McMahon said. \u201cI mean, our education system has failed our kids. The latest NAEP scores, which were released just after the president took office \u2014 and that\u2019s a national report card \u2014 only about 30% of high school and eighth graders can read proficiently or do math proficiently. Think about that. Public schools across the country only about 30%. Some places, 35%. But, it\u2019s just terrible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Later in the interview, McMahon changed course, saying kids were doing \u201cvery well\u201d with a traveling history quiz put together by the Trump administration.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know you are on tour right now, all 50 states, either you and\/or your team,\u201d Faulker said. \u201cIt is a nonpartisan tour, and typically includes a speech followed by a history quiz, and actually a bit of a game show, so we\u2019ll get into that. But queue the left\u2019s outrage anyway,\u201d Faulkner said.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven though it is not partisan and it\u2019s completely positive, at least four stops have been canceled in Massachusetts, Alabama, and Connecticut. Stops in Wisconsin, New Jersey and Illinois have been met with protesting,\u201d Faulkner said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is crazy,\u201d McMahon said. \u201cI don\u2019t know what they think it is about. If they come in and listen to the questions, they are about the Constitution, about the Declaration of Independence, our forefathers. It is learning about our country in civics, and a lot of the questions are relative to U.S. History. And we also have questions tailored to their states. It\u2019s a civics lesson. It\u2019s in lock-step with the president\u2019s 250th celebration, the country\u2019s 250th celebration.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHow are they doing with the questions?\u201d Faulkner asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are doing very well with those questions. It could be they get them ahead of time. I don\u2019t know,\u201d McMahon said.<\/p>\n
