Meanwhile, Sphere\u2019s operating loss decreased to $24.9 million (down from $93.8 million in Q1 2025).<\/p>\n<p>Many are already familiar with Sphere\u2019s growing slate of high-profile residencies; the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalmusicnews.com\/2025\/02\/24\/backstreet-boys-three-nights-at-sphere-residency\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"follow\">Backstreet Boys<\/a> are scheduled to deliver additional shows this summer, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalmusicnews.com\/2025\/11\/07\/no-doubt-sphere-residency\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"follow\">No Doubt<\/a> kicked off a Sphere performance series yesterday, to name a couple.<\/p>\n<p>(No Doubt is also capitalizing on the residency with an \u201cimmersive pop-up,\u201d described by Live Nation as featuring \u201cmore than 500 artifacts from the band\u2019s archives,\u201d in the Venetian. Though free and open to the public, said pop-up offers \u201cadded access for Vibee VIP passholders\u201d as well.)<\/p>\n<p>And while one might assume that these often-sold-out live events are doing most of the heavy lifting revenue-wise, \u201cSphere Experience\u201d<em> Wizard of Oz <\/em>showings played a major part in fueling the Q1 2026 growth, execs disclosed.<\/p>\n<h4>By the numbers, Sphere Experience accounted for 75% of the venue\u2019s $108 million YoY revenue increase, against a 23% YoY share for event-related sources (including brand outings).<\/h4>\n<p>Behind the former jump, execs pointed to 209 <em>Wizard of Oz <\/em>showings (up from a combined 200 Q1 2025 showings of <em>Postcard from Earth<\/em> and <em>V-U2<\/em>) with average revenue of $746,000 a pop.<\/p>\n<p>By category, it won\u2019t come as a shock that \u201cticketing and venue license fee\u201d made up the lion\u2019s share of Sphere revenue at $198.3 million across 2026\u2019s initial three months. Interestingly, however, Sphere generated more from merch and concessions ($33.7 million) than it did from sponsorships and Exosphere advertising ($27.1 million) on the quarter.<\/p>\n<p>As for what it costs to stage Sphere events \u2013 and pay the aforementioned talent, who undoubtedly played a key part in the merch-revenue hike \u2013 the company pointed to $94.4 million in \u201cevent-related expenses\u201d for Q1. That\u2019s distinct from \u201cother direct operating expenses\u201d ($4.8 million) and overhead expenses ($106.6 million).<\/p>\n<h4>During the corresponding earnings call, Sphere Entertainment higher-ups doubled down on their global expansion ambitions (including a forthcoming Sphere in Abu Dhabi and a 6,000-seat Sphere outside D.C.) and underscored plans to continue increasing Sphere\u2019s daily showings.<\/h4>\n<p>\u201cThe biggest changeover is when we do concerts,\u201d CEO James Dolan communicated. \u201cEven that, we were able to accomplish the changeover in under an hour.
