Spencer Pratt said his competitors Mayor Karen Bass and Councilmember Nithya Raman \u201cfailed Hollywood\u201d at his first Los Angeles mayoral debate appearance. <\/p>\n
NBC4 hosted the three leading candidates at the Skirball Cultural Center Wednesday in partnership with Loyola Marymount University, asking them directly how they would keep film production in Southern California.<\/p>\n
When asked if the current leadership was doing enough for the entertainment industry, Pratt replied bluntly. <\/p>\n
\u201cAbsolutely not,\u201d the former reality TV star said. \u201cBoth of these people have been the reason why there\u2019s no more Hollywood.\u201d<\/p>\n
Bass, who is running as the incumbent, lauded the work she has already done as mayor. She said that the city has expedited permits and lowered the cost of filming in Los Angeles, specifically at sites like the Griffith Observatory. The mayor also said that she established a film czar, something the industry has critiqued her for doing three years into her four-year term. <\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ll tell you, this has been a long-standing issue of mine,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen I was in Sacramento and served as speaker, I did the first tax credits and also promoted and advocated for those tax credits here in Sacramento. We have a long way to go, but we are absolutely making headway because of policies that I put in place.\u201d<\/p>\n The former star of \u201cThe Hills\u201d criticized both of his competitors for not doing enough for the industry while in office. He added though that even if they did pass legislation to create more efficiency in production it would not be enough. <\/p>\n \u201cEven if they do these things, we\u2019re still gonna have drug addicts all over the street because their treatment-first, open beds [policies],\u201d Pratt said. \u201cThese two politicians have failed Hollywood times a thousand.\u201d<\/p>\n He also spewed that producers in the industry have told him they had to \u201cpay gang members to keep the streets safe to film,\u201d making it inefficient to shoot in the city. <\/p>\n Councilmember Raman, whose husband is a writer-producer on shows including \u201c30 Rock\u201d and \u201cNobody Wants This,\u201d reiterated that the Hollywood production issue is personal to her.<\/p>\n \u201cWe desperately need to keep Hollywood here,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd I feel like the mayor\u2019s role is really to be the loudest advocate for the best possible version of the policies that we need, including a tax credit that has no cap.\u201d<\/p>\n The District 4 councilmember also advocated for an uncapped film tax credit program that would be guaranteed for years into the future so that studios and production companies could invest in L.A.<\/p>\n Raman said she would create a film office in the city to create more efficiency in production timelines and to cut red tape. She added that it will be crucial for the mayor to work with a cooperative governor who will fund the film tax credit to its fullest potential.<\/p>\n \u201cWe need people who know the industry and know the city and can make sure that we\u2019re working across county jurisdictions,\u201d she said. \u201cAngelenos in the industry need a fighter. I will be that.\u201d<\/p>\n The NBC4 moderators discouraged name-calling and cross-talk during the debate. While the candidates attempted to stay within the lines, the moderators inconsistently allotted the candidates time to respond when they were spoken about, causing complaints from the trio. <\/p>\n Pratt called Bass an \u201cincredible liar\u201d early on in the debate over issues surrounding the January 2025 Palisades and Eaton fires. <\/p>\n Raman said the reality star\u2019s solutions represented a \u201cMAGA Republican\u2019s ideas of what L.A. looks like.\u201d Pratt clapped back that he\u2019s \u201cactually from L.A.\u201d <\/p>\n Spencer Pratt just DESTROYED Nithya Raman who was trying to convince LA that he and Karen Bass are teaming up against her because they have a better chance against each other.<\/p>\n Pratt: “First off, Mayor Bass and I are definitely not working together. Pratt guffawed at the idea that it would be easier for him to face off against an incumbent mayor than a \u201crandom councilmember.\u201d Bass laughed seemingly in agreement. <\/p>\n The hour-long debate was hosted by NBC4 and Telemundo 52. NBC4 News anchor Colleen Williams, NBC4 chief political reporter Conan Nolan and Noticiero Telemundo 52 News anchor Enrique Chiabra moderated the debate.<\/p>\n Hours after the debate, NBC4 Los Angeles, the station that aired the debate, posted an online poll asking viewers to cast their vote on who won. According to the poll<\/a>, Pratt was overwhelmingly declared the winner by 87% at the time of this publishing. Mayor Bass came in a distant second at 8%, with Raman trailing right behind at 5%.<\/p>\n There was also a poll asking whether the debate changed viewers\u2019 minds, with 73% responding that their vote would remain the same, 22% saying they decided to change their vote and 5% remained undecided.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n You can watch a clip from the debate in the video above.<\/p>\n
