{"id":903055,"date":"2026-05-02T05:23:01","date_gmt":"2026-05-02T10:23:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2026\/05\/02\/pressure-mounts-on-uk-government-to-ban-kanye-west-after-festival-backlash\/"},"modified":"2026-05-02T05:23:01","modified_gmt":"2026-05-02T10:23:01","slug":"pressure-mounts-on-uk-government-to-ban-kanye-west-after-festival-backlash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2026\/05\/02\/pressure-mounts-on-uk-government-to-ban-kanye-west-after-festival-backlash\/","title":{"rendered":"Pressure mounts on UK government to ban Kanye West after festival backlash"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Music <\/p>\n<section data-qa=\"GenericArticle-Content\">\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\">The British government was under growing pressure on Monday to bar American rapper Kanye West from entering the country after he was named as the headline act for the Wireless Festival of rap and hip-hop music set for July.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\">West, now known as Ye, has been criticised in the past for antisemitic remarks and celebration of Nazism, which have led on several occasions to his \u200csocial media accounts, including on X, being barred.<\/p>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\">\n<p>The decision to book Ye prompted several companies to pull their sponsorship of the festival, while the main opposition Conservative Party wrote to Home Secretary <\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/shabana-mahmood?module=inline&#038;pgtype=article\" title data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\"><span data-qa=\"Component-Text\">Shabana Mahmood<\/span><\/a>, urging her to ban him from entering Britain.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\">Asked for comment, a Home Office source said ministers were reviewing his permission to enter the country.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\">The Home Office does not usually comment on individual cases, but Mahmood has powers to personally request Ye be excluded from the UK. In January, the department revoked the Electronic Travel Authorisation of Eva Vlaardingerbroek, a Dutch far-right activist, for spreading false information.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\">Melvin Benn, managing \u2060director at Festival Republic, one of the organisers, defended the decision to have Ye headline the event despite his \u201cabhorrent\u201d comments, urging the public to offer him forgiveness.<\/p>\n<div data-qa=\"Component-renderMap-StyledDiv\">\n<figure data-qa=\"ArticleImage-ArticleImageContainer\">\n<div data-qa=\"ArticleImage-handleRenderImage-ImageContainer\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"music Kanye West performing in 2024.
