Man\u00adag\u00ading Di\u00adrec\u00adtor of Pina\u00adka Con\u00adsult\u00ading, Shi\u00adva Bisses\u00adsar, warned that cy\u00adber\u00adcrim\u00adi\u00adnals are rapid\u00adly evolv\u00ading their tac\u00adtics, us\u00ading more con\u00advinc\u00ading and tech\u00adno\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly ad\u00advanced meth\u00adods to ex\u00adploit vul\u00adner\u00ada\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adties with\u00adin or\u00adgan\u00adi\u00adsa\u00adtions.<\/p>\n

Speak\u00ading to the Busi\u00adness Guardian, Bisses\u00adsar high\u00adlight\u00aded deep\u00adfakes as one of the most press\u00ading risks fac\u00ading busi\u00adness\u00ades to\u00adday. He al\u00adso ref\u00ader\u00adenced his pre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtion at the CAN\u00adTO Con\u00adnect 2026 and its 42nd AGM, held from Feb\u00adru\u00adary 1 to 3 at the Hy\u00adatt Re\u00adgency Ho\u00adtel in Port of Spain, where the is\u00adsue was a cen\u00adtral fo\u00adcus.<\/p>\n

CAN\u00adTO Caribbean, in a so\u00adcial me\u00addia post on the event, not\u00aded that Bisses\u00adsar ad\u00addressed the grow\u00ading threat posed by deep\u00adfakes\u2014AI-gen\u00ader\u00adat\u00aded con\u00adtent ca\u00adpa\u00adble of ma\u00adnip\u00adu\u00adlat\u00ading au\u00addio, video and im\u00adages in ways that un\u00adder\u00admine trust, se\u00adcu\u00adri\u00adty and de\u00adci\u00adsion-mak\u00ading across gov\u00adern\u00adments, busi\u00adness\u00ades and so\u00adci\u00adety.<\/p>\n

That ses\u00adsion ex\u00adam\u00adined what deep\u00adfakes are, why they mat\u00adter, and how busi\u00adness own\u00aders, or\u00adgan\u00adi\u00adsa\u00adtions and pol\u00adi\u00adcy\u00admak\u00aders can re\u00adspond in an in\u00adcreas\u00ading\u00adly com\u00adplex dig\u00adi\u00adtal en\u00advi\u00adron\u00adment.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, what is the at\u00adtack evo\u00adlu\u00adtion that we\u2019re see\u00ading right now? Deep\u00adfakes, AI-gen\u00ader\u00adat\u00aded con\u00adtent, it\u2019s a threat that is out there right now, and we\u2019re see\u00ading it mov\u00ading. You guys would have seen the videos with Will Smith two years ago eat\u00ading spaghet\u00adti, where he looks re\u00adal\u00adly con\u00adtort\u00aded and his face is all over the place, to now where we have re\u00adal\u00adis\u00adtic deep\u00adfakes.\u201d<\/p>\n

He ex\u00adplained that cy\u00adber\u00adcrim\u00adi\u00adnals are shift\u00ading away from tra\u00addi\u00adtion\u00adal so\u00adcial en\u00adgi\u00adneer\u00ading tech\u00adniques to more ad\u00advanced, AI-en\u00adhanced de\u00adcep\u00adtion strate\u00adgies.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd the at\u00adtack evo\u00adlu\u00adtion is go\u00ading to be now, mov\u00ading so\u00adcial en\u00adgi\u00adneer\u00ading from your tra\u00addi\u00adtion\u00adal meth\u00adods of try\u00ading to fool peo\u00adple, to try\u00ading to fool peo\u00adple with more con\u00advinc\u00ading deep\u00adfakes. So so\u00adcial en\u00adgi\u00adneer\u00ading is not a tech\u00adni\u00adcal term, it\u2019s some\u00adthing that you do all the time. You come and you meet an au\u00addi\u00adence, you so\u00adcial en\u00adgi\u00adneer your way in\u00adto a room. So\u00adcial en\u00adgi\u00adneer\u00ading is how we con\u00advince peo\u00adple to trust us, to car\u00adry out some ac\u00adtion that we want them to car\u00adry out. It\u2019s not tech\u00adni\u00adcal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bisses\u00adsar warned that this evo\u00adlu\u00adtion is al\u00adready af\u00adfect\u00ading busi\u00adness\u00ades through schemes such as busi\u00adness email com\u00adpro\u00admise, where fraud\u00adsters im\u00adper\u00adson\u00adate ven\u00addors or ex\u00adec\u00adu\u00adtives to ma\u00adnip\u00adu\u00adlate em\u00adploy\u00adees in\u00adto au\u00adtho\u00adris\u00ading pay\u00adments or grant\u00adi\u00adng ac\u00adcess.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have now the ad\u00advent of at\u00adtacks that are based on busi\u00adness email com\u00adpro\u00admise. So, a busi\u00adness email com\u00adpro\u00admise is where you would see some\u00adone pre\u00adtend\u00ading to be a ven\u00addor. They will send you an email, and they are try\u00ading to con\u00advince you to click on that email and add them to the ven\u00addor list, or send a wire to an ex-dif\u00adfer\u00adent ac\u00adcount that you\u2019re nor\u00admal\u00adly ac\u00adcus\u00adtomed to. That busi\u00adness email com\u00adpro\u00admise is very preva\u00adlent in T&T.\u201d<\/p>\n

He stressed that es\u00adtab\u00adlished in\u00adter\u00adnal con\u00adtrols\u2014par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly those gov\u00adern\u00ading fi\u00adnan\u00adcial trans\u00adac\u00adtions\u2014must not be by\u00adpassed, even when com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adtions ap\u00adpear le\u00adgit\u00adi\u00admate.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have to go through a process. But this is the game. These guys are so good at try\u00ading to get you to by\u00adpass your ex\u00adist\u00ading work\u00adflows. This is what they try to do. So, they would send you an email, pre\u00adtend to be a sup\u00adpli\u00ader, hey, click on this link to add them to the list. Click on this link to send mon\u00adey to a dif\u00adfer\u00adent ac\u00adcount.\u201d<\/p>\n

New and Emerg\u00ading Threats<\/p>\n

Bisses\u00adsar al\u00adso point\u00aded to a grow\u00ading range of AI-en\u00adabled threats, not\u00ading that cy\u00adber\u00adcrim\u00adi\u00adnals are re\u00adfin\u00ading their tac\u00adtics us\u00ading more so\u00adphis\u00adti\u00adcat\u00aded scripts and de\u00adcep\u00adtion tech\u00adniques.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat are some of these AI-en\u00adabled tech\u00adniques? We\u2019ve seen the tech\u00adni\u00adcal mea\u00adsures that bad ac\u00adtors are try\u00ading to per\u00adpe\u00adtrate against the good ac\u00adtors, where are the good ac\u00adtors, or their po\u00adten\u00adtial vic\u00adtims. The ar\u00adeas that they would ex\u00adploit would be that pre\u00adtext script that they have to try to con\u00advince some\u00adbody that they are some\u00adone else. Those scripts will now im\u00adprove with AI.\u201d<\/p>\n

He high\u00adlight\u00aded \u201cfi\u00adnan\u00adcial sex\u00adtor\u00adtion\u201d as an\u00adoth\u00ader emerg\u00ading con\u00adcern, par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly af\u00adfect\u00ading younger users.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is where per\u00adsons try to prey on teenagers and get them to sub\u00admit some com\u00adpro\u00admis\u00ading pho\u00adto of them\u00adselves, and they will use that now as lever\u00adage to ask them for mon\u00adey once they\u2019ve fall\u00aden vic\u00adtim to that scheme. These at\u00adtacks are not per\u00adpe\u00adtrat\u00aded by in\u00addi\u00advid\u00adu\u00adals. There are groups known for these types of at\u00adtacks, and they are based in cer\u00adtain re\u00adgions of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

He not\u00aded sim\u00adi\u00adlar\u00adi\u00adties with ro\u00admance scams, which have al\u00adready been flagged lo\u00adcal\u00adly by the Fi\u00adnan\u00adcial In\u00adtel\u00adli\u00adgence Unit of Trinidad and To\u00adba\u00adgo.<\/p>\n

\u201cRo\u00admance scams have been recog\u00adnised by the Fi\u00adnan\u00adcial In\u00adtel\u00adli\u00adgence Unit of Trinidad and To\u00adba\u00adgo (FI\u00adUTT) as some\u00adthing tak\u00ading place in Trinidad and To\u00adba\u00adgo of sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcance. They have da\u00adta to sup\u00adport that. They\u2019ve is\u00adsued a re\u00adport. They\u2019ve is\u00adsued warn\u00adings on that, where\u00adas the fi\u00adnan\u00adcial sex\u00adtor\u00adtion is some\u00adthing that ap\u00adplies to the youth. But this type of ex\u00adtor\u00adtion, if we look at it from that gen\u00ader\u00adal word of ex\u00adtor\u00adtion, it is some\u00adthing that takes place glob\u00adal\u00adly, and it has been tak\u00ading place in T&T.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bisses\u00adsar added that deep\u00adfake-en\u00adabled fraud is no longer the\u00ado\u00adret\u00adi\u00adcal, cit\u00ading a high-pro\u00adfile case in Hong Kong where a com\u00adpa\u00adny em\u00adploy\u00adee was tricked dur\u00ading a video call in\u00adto trans\u00adfer\u00adring mil\u00adlions of dol\u00adlars.<\/p>\n

\u201cDeep\u00adfake at\u00adtacks did take place in Hong Kong maybe a cou\u00adple years ago, where the con\u00adtroller of ac\u00adcounts was on a con\u00adfer\u00adence call that he thought was his ex\u00adec\u00adu\u00adtives, and they were ba\u00adsi\u00adcal\u00adly scammed out of…he sent mon\u00adey. He fol\u00adlowed the in\u00adstruc\u00adtions re\u00adceived on that video call, and he sent mon\u00adey to the tune of, I be\u00adlieve, $25 mil\u00adlion. So, this is not fic\u00adtion.\u201d<\/p>\n

He al\u00adso warned that ran\u00adsomware at\u00adtacks are be\u00adcom\u00ading more or\u00adgan\u00adised, with cy\u00adber\u00adcrim\u00adi\u00adnals op\u00ader\u00adat\u00ading in struc\u00adtured net\u00adworks re\u00adsem\u00adbling le\u00adgit\u00adi\u00admate busi\u00adness ecosys\u00adtems.<\/p>\n

\u201cRan\u00adsomware is be\u00ading per\u00adpe\u00adtrat\u00aded by a group of bad ac\u00adtors. It\u2019s an ecosys\u00adtem. It\u2019s a busi\u00adness ecosys\u00adtem. Just as you have economies of scale in the every\u00adday world, these guys have classed them\u00adselves in\u00adto ar\u00adeas of spe\u00adcial\u00adi\u00adsa\u00adtion.\u201d<\/p>\n

Call for Col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtion<\/p>\n

Against this back\u00addrop, Bisses\u00adsar called for stronger col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtion be\u00adtween the pub\u00adlic and pri\u00advate sec\u00adtors to counter the grow\u00ading cy\u00adber threat.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe bad ac\u00adtors are cre\u00adat\u00ading ecosys\u00adtems. What are the good ac\u00adtors do\u00ading? Do we tru\u00adly have pub\u00adlic-pri\u00advate part\u00adner\u00adship in Trinidad and To\u00adba\u00adgo when it comes to cy\u00adber\u00adse\u00adcu\u00adri\u00adty? We\u2019ve heard some great plans about what the Telecom\u00admu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adtions Au\u00adthor\u00adi\u00adty of Trinidad and To\u00adba\u00adgo (TATT) is do\u00ading. But I would en\u00adcour\u00adage you to part\u00adner with the pri\u00advate sec\u00adtor as well. Part\u00adner with some of the small\u00ader pri\u00advate sec\u00adtor en\u00adti\u00adties as well, be\u00adcause we have cer\u00adtain ex\u00adper\u00adtise that we could lend to this type of sit\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtion.\u201d<\/p>\n
