A man has been charged with attempted murder following the alleged stabbing of a musician outside a NSW<\/a> sports club.<\/p>\n

Greg Bryce, 69, was allegedly stabbed several times in his chest and back near the venue\u2019s entrance in Newcastle, where he had been performing on Sunday night.<\/p>\n

The musician had finished his gig and was loading his gear into his car at the entrance of Club Merewether, formerly Merewether Bowling Club, at 7.40pm when he was attacked.<\/p>\n

According to friend Michelle Croker a doctor was at the club and treated Bryce until paramedics arrived.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe venue acted quickly and did everything they could,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey secured all his gear in the venue and helped police, which led to a quick arrest last night.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bryce, a singer and guitarist with Newcastle band DV8, was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition.<\/p>\n

Croker said Bryce was still in hospital and \u201chopefully will heal and recover with support, care and time\u201d.<\/p>\n

His alleged attacker Yury Skrynnik, 53, left the scene before officers arrived, but was arrested at a home in Stockton, in Newcastle\u2019s north, early on Monday morning.<\/p>\n

Skrynnik was charged with domestic-violence-related attempted murder and contravening an AVO.<\/p>\n

He did not apply for release and bail was formally refused as he was remanded in custody ahead of his next court date in May.<\/p>\n

The club, which hosts live music on Sunday evenings, confirmed the stabbing and said it was co-operating with police.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe immediate priority has been the wellbeing of the victim, their family, and the safety and support of all staff and patrons,\u201d club manager Peter Weeding said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are relieved to report that they are receiving medical care, and we extend our heartfelt well wishes for a full and speedy recovery.\u201d<\/p>\n
