The companies were ordered to pay $6 million in damages to the woman who said she was harmed by their addictive features as a child.<\/p>\n<p>The case was brought by a 20-year-old woman, named in court documents as \u201cK.G.M,\u201d who sued Meta, YouTube, TikTok and Snap, saying that she had been harmed by the platforms as a child due to addictive features. TikTok and Snap reached <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/social-media\/tiktok-settles-to-avoid-major-social-media-addiction-lawsuit-183943927.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:a settlement;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{\"yLinkPosition\":\"2\",\"yLinkElement\":\"context_link\",\"yPosition\":\"1\",\"yModuleName\":\"content-canvas\",\"yLinkText\":\"a settlement\",\"yHasCommerce\":false}\">a settlement<\/a> ahead of the trial.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/tech\/tech-news\/verdict-reached-landmark-social-media-addiction-trial-rcna263421\" data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:NBC News;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{\"yLinkPosition\":\"3\",\"yLinkElement\":\"context_link\",\"yPosition\":\"1\",\"yModuleName\":\"content-canvas\",\"yLinkText\":\"NBC News\",\"yHasCommerce\":false}\"><em>NBC News<\/em><\/a>, Meta was ordered to pay 70 percent of the $3 million in compensatory damages with YouTube taking on the remaining portion. The jury awarded an additional $3 million in punitive damages. \u201cWe respectfully disagree with the verdict and are evaluating our legal options,\u201d a Meta spokesperson said in a statement. \u201cWe disagree with the verdict and plan to appeal.,\u201d Google spokesperson Jos\u00e9 Casta\u00f1eda said in a statement. \u201cThis case misunderstands YouTube, which is a responsibly built streaming platform, not a social media site.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The weeks-long trial has been closely watched because it&#8217;s the first of many court cases in which plaintiffs have argued that social media platforms harmed minors due to how they were designed.
