{"id":897297,"date":"2026-04-06T09:19:50","date_gmt":"2026-04-06T14:19:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2026\/04\/06\/us-wine-exports-slashed-by-a-third-on-back-of-canada-trade-spat\/"},"modified":"2026-04-06T09:19:50","modified_gmt":"2026-04-06T14:19:50","slug":"us-wine-exports-slashed-by-a-third-on-back-of-canada-trade-spat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2026\/04\/06\/us-wine-exports-slashed-by-a-third-on-back-of-canada-trade-spat\/","title":{"rendered":"US wine exports slashed by a third on back of Canada trade spat"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>US wine exports lost US$428 million in 2024, new data from the US Census Bureau has revealed, with exports to its leading market, Canada, plummeting 76%.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thedrinksbusiness.com\/content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/iStock-1241430568-1024x648.jpg\" alt=\"British Columbia predicts 50% fall in wine production following extreme weather\" width=\"1024\" height=\"648\"  ><\/p>\n<p>US wine exports fell 33.5% overall, down from US$1.3 billion in 2024 to US$850 million in 2025, the stats showed \u2013 a loss of US$428 million.<\/p>\n<p>The loss of the Canadian market, which saw all provinces initially pull bottles of US wine off retail sales (although two provinces, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cwyp9g7p5p9o\">Alberta and Saskatchewan<\/a> later started reselling it) came as part of a wider \u2018buy local\u2019 movement across the country in response to President Trump\u2019s decision to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian goods and remarks that he wanted Canada to become the \u201c51st state\u201d.\u00a0It has seen imports of US wine to Canada fall from US$34million in May 2024, to only US$961,084 in May 2025, rising a little to US$1 million in June.
