Movies, records, the way a great story can shift how people see the world. That\u2019s always been the thing that gets me out of bed. For years, that passion and my work in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/money-finance\/the-future-of-finances-will-be-defined-by-this-one-shift\/497440\" rel target=\"_self\">financial services<\/a> existed in parallel. Then, during a major rebranding at Siebert Financial, the two collided.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019d been in business for nearly 60 years at that point. Loyal client base, institutional credibility and the kind of discipline you\u2019d expect from a publicly traded firm. But we also recognized that our industry has a tendency to stay still. People keep doing things the same way because it makes them money, and they don\u2019t always see the paradigm shifting underneath them.<\/p>\n<p>Particularly post-Covid, when audiences started engaging with content and culture at a completely different pace, we saw a huge opportunity. Moving our headquarters to Miami sharpened our focus: There were entire segments of people (across cities and generations) that we could reach with the right cultural and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/growing-a-business\/why-you-should-bet-on-the-media-industry\/473697\" rel target=\"_self\">media investment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So we made a decision: We stopped treating culture as a line item and started treating it as infrastructure.<\/p>\n<h2>Music Cultural match is everything<\/h2>\n<p>Gebbia Media exists because of a single conviction: People resonate with services and companies only if a genuine cultural match exists.<\/p>\n<p>We don\u2019t see the content we create, the media we invest in, the music we back as mere promotion. All of it is a long-term investment in cultural resonance with our customers and a means to engage a new generation of investors.<\/p>\n<p>The financial case was clean: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/leadership\/an-entertainmentevents-industry-vets-3-pillars-of\/447473\" rel target=\"_self\">Entertainment<\/a> is becoming a diversified asset class. But the strategic case ran deeper. Outsourcing everything connected to your public perception is giving up control of your own story to external entities. And too many big firms, public ones especially, have done exactly that.<\/p>\n<p>We wanted the opposite. We internalized the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/why-the-smartest-brands-are-becoming-media-companies\/502504\" rel target=\"_self\">storytelling<\/a> and the creative approach, and we use outsourcing only to produce the vision. The distinction between a one-time home run and something that delivers consistently over years maps perfectly onto how we approach cultural assets. You can get lucky with one viral moment. But without a body of work, without a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/starting-a-business\/how-to-design-a-brand-story-that-connects-with-customers\/441218\" rel target=\"_self\">brand story<\/a> that withstands the test of time, you\u2019re back to zero the day after the spike fades. What we want is a truckload of doubles that keep delivering, alongside whatever home runs may come.<\/p>\n<p>Marketing stunts have a place. But here\u2019s the uncomfortable truth most won\u2019t say out loud: You are only as relevant as your advertising spend if you haven\u2019t invested in the long term. If you haven\u2019t built a brand that can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/leadership\/how-to-build-a-brand-that-lasts-50-years\/430423\" rel target=\"_self\">withstand the test of time<\/a>, you\u2019re renting every client interaction.<\/p>\n<h2>Music Where this gets real<\/h2>\n<p>Gen Z developed a genuine yearning to meet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/growing-a-business\/how-to-combine-offline-with-online-marketing\/469037\" rel target=\"_self\">in person<\/a>, not just scroll another feed. We saw that and moved on it. Through the music labels we\u2019ve acquired, we started producing a series of intimate, acoustic concerts \u2014 artists playing six or seven unplugged songs in a room with our clients, athletes and influencers. We make it a very intimate evening.<\/p>\n<p>We call them \u201cOff the Record.\u201d The most recent was January 27th at the notorious Whisky a Go Go in Los Angeles, a landmark venue and, for us, a chance to put our artists in front of a live audience that actually cares about the music. While a financial services firm sponsoring a rock show might seem like a distraction to an outsider, it\u2019s a calculated investment in building trust through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/growing-a-business\/how-to-tap-into-community-and-drive-engagement-with-live\/324012\" rel target=\"_self\">physical connection<\/a>. After Chicago and Nashville, we\u2019re expanding to New York next. We\u2019re building something designed to compound.<\/p>\n<h2>Music Head of food and beverages<\/h2>\n<p>None of this sits easily with everyone in finance. The pushback from traditional voices always starts the same way: \u201cWe all consume media. How complicated can it be?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My answer: Consuming content does not make you an expert in creating it. The two are fundamentally different disciplines, and the misunderstanding costs real money.<\/p>\n<p>We constantly educate our more old-school colleagues on this. And we back it with numbers. Compared to companies of similar size in our sector, our approach delivers 40%-60% greater cost efficiency in marketing and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/growing-a-business\/how-to-build-brand-awareness-and-loyalty\/429380\" rel target=\"_self\">brand awareness<\/a> investments.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Here\u2019s why: Every time you invest in culture, you\u2019re lowering your future brand awareness costs. The connection isn\u2019t linear, which is exactly why most ignore it. But when someone trusts a brand and culturally resonates with it, the barrier to becoming a customer drops.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a scene in <i>Casino<\/i> where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/leadership\/i-blew-an-audition-with-robert-de-niro-but-the\/495080\" rel target=\"_self\">De Niro<\/a>\u2018s character, asked about his qualifications, says he was \u201chead of food and beverages.\u201d It\u2019s a throwaway line, but it stuck with me. He\u2019s running the casino, but his title doesn\u2019t matter. What matters is that he\u2019s setting a direction.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>That\u2019s how I see my role at Gebbia Media: Taste matters when you try to create cultural resonance, but there\u2019s rigour in running a team that provides for many people in an unpredictable environment like a casino, just like in the ever-changing media landscape.<\/p>\n<p>We love media. We love culture. But we approach both with commercial discipline.<\/p>\n<h2>Music Managing media like a portfolio<\/h2>\n<p>That commercial discipline extends to how we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/starting-a-business\/mitigate-the-risk-of-business-failure-with-these-4\/436774\" rel target=\"_self\">manage risk<\/a>. Media investment carries risk, no exception. But we manage it the way we\u2019d manage any financial position.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/leadership\/how-to-never-get-burned-by-a-bad-business-decision-again\/502229\" rel target=\"_self\">Due diligence<\/a> for a cultural deal looks like due diligence for a financial deal. The shallow version is follower counts, past performance and future potential, but it is never enough on its own. Data helps us project potential outcomes, but data alone won\u2019t save you. You still have to make bold calls rooted in vision and intuition. Some bets are daring with higher upside; some are safer with steadier returns. Just like a balanced portfolio, media requires the same mix.<\/p>\n<h2>Music Culture was never optional<\/h2>\n<p>Let me challenge a premise I hear constantly, that culture <i>might<\/i> become central to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/starting-a-business\/boost-your-companys-enterprise-value-to-drive-profitability\/433535\" rel target=\"_self\">enterprise value<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It already is. It always has been. The people responsible for it just haven\u2019t always been able to express it on a balance sheet.<\/p>\n<p>Look at any organization that\u2019s survived for decades. Ours has been around for almost 60 years, and that\u2019s not an accident. It\u2019s the result of investing in cultural relevance, whether consciously or not. Now extend that forward: As technology commoditizes infrastructure, products and service delivery, the only differentiator left is whether <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/your-brand-is-about-the-feels\/275287\" rel target=\"_self\">people <i>feel<\/i> something<\/a> when they encounter your organization. Given comparable infrastructure, culture is what makes you win or lose.<\/p>\n<p>The companies that figure this out will own the next decade.
