{"id":896427,"date":"2026-04-02T09:13:20","date_gmt":"2026-04-02T14:13:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2026\/04\/02\/armeen-musa-bringing-the-soul-of-bangla-music-to-shanghai\/"},"modified":"2026-04-02T09:13:20","modified_gmt":"2026-04-02T14:13:20","slug":"armeen-musa-bringing-the-soul-of-bangla-music-to-shanghai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2026\/04\/02\/armeen-musa-bringing-the-soul-of-bangla-music-to-shanghai\/","title":{"rendered":"Armeen Musa \u2013 Bringing the Soul of Bangla Music to Shanghai"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Music <\/p>\n<div id=\"content-body\">\n<p>When people hear the word Bangladesh, they might think of frequent flooding, or perhaps where\u00a0their H&#038;M t-shirt was made.<\/p>\n<p>Those more politically-minded may cast their minds to the recent instability, and a Gen-Z uprising which<span>\u2014<\/span>with some irony<span>\u2014<\/span>brought back the old guard.<\/p>\n<p>British people may think of the culinary influence this outpost of the Commonwealth has had on the sceptered, and now spicier isle.<\/p>\n<p>Famously, the most popular dish in the UK is chicken tikka masala, created by Bangladeshi immigrants for the palates of their new neighbors.<\/p>\n<p>What doesn\u2019t occur to most people is that, as\u00a0<span>well as masala sauce,<\/span> the country is also home to some of the richest melodies in Asia.<\/p>\n<p>Steeped in the mysticism synonymous with South Asia, and connected to the fertile soil and riverine landscapes of the delta nation, the music is equally lush.<\/p>\n<p>Heading to Shanghai at the end of March is one of its finest modern ambassadors, representing its storied history and<span>\u2014<\/span>befitting its young population<span>\u2014<\/span>an optimistic modernity.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thatsmags.com\/image\/view\/202603\/Weixin-Image_2026-03-16_103842_258.jpg\" title=\"music Weixin-Image_2026-03-16_103842_258.jpg\" width=\"100%\" height alt=\"music Weixin-Image_2026-03-16_103842_258.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>Armeen Musa hails from a musical family <span>that is also prominent in the legal world<\/span>\u2014a fitting contradiction that, in many ways, encapsulates one of the world&#8217;s most densely populated nations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When my mum was born, the family really shifted into academics and law, and it was assumed we would move away from musical life,\u201d she tells us in slightly hushed tones (the result of a cold).<\/p>\n<p>Her own nascent law career stalled early; studying\u00a0<span>in the UK,<\/span>\u00a0she switched majors<span>\u00a0<\/span>to graduate with an economics degree.<\/p>\n<p>However, the lure of melody pulled her away permanently from numbers to the musical notes of her ancestry.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thatsmags.com\/image\/view\/202603\/Weixin-Image_2026-03-16_103838_547.jpg\" title=\"music Weixin-Image_2026-03-16_103838_547.jpg\" width=\"100%\" height alt=\"music Weixin-Image_2026-03-16_103838_547.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>To that end, she studied at the renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, where she found it &#8220;was the best place for someone like me, who is interested in global music education.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The experience helped her find Bangladesh\u2019s rightful place within that global sound, ultimately leading to her intriguing blend of modernity and traditional Bangla sensibilities.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thatsmags.com\/image\/view\/202603\/Weixin-Image_2026-03-16_103845_745.jpg\" title=\"music Weixin-Image_2026-03-16_103845_745.jpg\" width=\"100%\" height alt=\"music Weixin-Image_2026-03-16_103845_745.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>A highlight for Armeen was collaborating with the acclaimed Bobby McFerrin, a frequent visitor to Berklee, who introduced her to the magic of choral singing\u2014a rarity in Bangladesh, where solo voices, &#8220;crying in the wilderness of the mind,&#8221; are more the norm.<\/p>\n<p>McFerrin introduced Armeen to &#8220;spontaneous composition, based on African tribes\u2014he goes to a city, works with singers and recreates songs live on stage.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This led to her involvement in the Berklee Indian Ensemble, a multicultural group of musicians linked to the college who released the album\u00a0<em>Shuruaat<\/em>, which blends South Asian classical and folk traditions with jazz, rock, and other global influences.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thatsmags.com\/image\/view\/202603\/Weixin-Image_2026-03-16_103849_335.jpg\" title=\"music Weixin-Image_2026-03-16_103849_335.jpg\" width=\"70%\" height alt=\"music Weixin-Image_2026-03-16_103849_335.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>Armeen\u2019s contribution was a song called &#8216;Jaago Piya,&#8217; the lyrics of which were written by her mother.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Presumably, that smoothed over any potential copyright claims\u00a0one might wish to avoid with a lawyer (knowing Bengali mothers, it might have been an issue).<\/p>\n<p>That the album was nominated for Best Global Music Album at the 65th Grammy Awards may have also helped.<\/p>\n<p>The achievement made Armeen the first Bangladeshi composer to be associated with a Grammy-nominated album\u2014a distinction that speaks both to her talent and to the relative worldwide ignorance of Bangladesh&#8217;s musical depth.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thatsmags.com\/image\/view\/202603\/Weixin-Image_2026-03-16_103830_902.jpg\" title=\"music Weixin-Image_2026-03-16_103830_902.jpg\" width=\"100%\" height alt=\"music Weixin-Image_2026-03-16_103830_902.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>Indeed, the reaction of many when first introduced to Bangla music is how mesmerizing it can be\u2014an adjective well suited to Armeen&#8217;s passion project upon returning home: The Ghaashphoring Choir, a collective who &#8220;take folk and classic Bangla songs and put them into choral versions with Western harmonies.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For those who seek them out on Spotify or YouTube, the results are well worth the effort.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thatsmags.com\/image\/view\/202603\/Weixin-Image_2026-03-16_103835_196.jpg\" title=\"music Weixin-Image_2026-03-16_103835_196.jpg\" width=\"100%\" height alt=\"music Weixin-Image_2026-03-16_103835_196.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>So, what can the audience at the Pearl expect on March 26, given that Armeen is performing solo?<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As a music director I&#8217;m constantly doing things that are big, but my actual sound as a singer-songwriter is quite intimate.&#8221;
