One of the most unexpected bits of news this month was the announcement that \u201cGerald\u2019s Game\u201d and \u201cDoctor Sleep\u201d filmmaker Mike Flanagan was working on a new film adaptation of Stephen King\u2019s novella \u201cThe Mist\u201d.<\/p>\n

The story follows a group of people trapped in a local grocery store after their town becomes enshrouded in a strange mist in which monsters lurk and kill anyone who steps outside. As the confinement takes its toll on their nerves, a religious zealot within their group begins to play on their fears.<\/p>\n

The news wasn\u2019t particularly well-received. The well-liked story was previously adapted into a film in 2007 by filmmaker Frank Darabont, a movie that was famously quite a loyal adaptation of the book, right up until the last five minutes when it took a very dark and different turn with a divisive ending.<\/p>\n

A poorly received 2017 Spike TV series adaptation was also made, which ran for a single season. Neither adaptation was a hit, and so many were asking the obvious question \u2013 why is he bothering with this?<\/p>\n

Flanagan has now taken to his Bluesky<\/a> account to defend his decision, saying he has zero intention of remaking Darabont\u2019s film and this will be a whole new version from the ground up:<\/p>\n

\u201cIf there wasn\u2019t an excellent answer to \u2018why\u2019, I wouldn\u2019t do it. I love Darabont\u2019s film, and there\u2019s zero point in remaking it. Which is why I\u2019m going in a different direction. I learned a long ago never to try to predict what the fans will or won\u2019t argue about\u2026 but yeah, this isn\u2019t a retread. The differences start page 1.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

He adds that he\u2019s received the same \u201cbut why\u201d questions for many of his previous works including \u201cThe Haunting of Hill House,\u201d \u201cThe Haunting of Bly Manor,\u201d \u201cFall of the House of Usher,\u201d and even \u201cOuija: Origin of Evil\u201d along with his upcoming new takes on \u201cCarrie\u201d and \u201cThe Exorcist\u201d. He also says: \u201cI\u2019ve been lucky so far in my career to only take on projects I\u2019m really excited about.\u201d<\/p>\n

Flanagan is currently at work on the new \u201cThe Exorcist\u201d film, starring Scarlett Johansson, due out in 2027. His mini-series take on \u201cCarrie\u201d is due out later this year.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
