But while the nurturing relationship between a mother and child is important, it was actually the interactions between a father and child that had the biggest impact on the youngster’s health even years later.

<ev-engagement id="horizon_hello" group-name="horizon_hello"></ev-engagement>

A recent study published in Health Psychology followed families from infancy into early childhood and found that early father-child dynamics were linked to children’s later markers of heart and metabolic health. The findings don’t suggest that dads alone determine a child’s future well-being, but they do highlight how emotionally-attuned parenting can be an important factor.

© Getty Images

Research suggests a father’s interactions with their children can impact on their health

How early father-child interactions may shape long-term health

In the study, researchers observed three-way interactions between ten-month-old babies and both parents, then again when the children were two and seven years old. It uncovered a striking pattern that showed fathers who were less attentive and emotionally engaged with their ten-month-olds were more likely to struggle with co-parenting. Instead of working collaboratively with the mothers, they tended to withdraw or compete for the child’s attention.

By the age of seven, children of those fathers were more likely to show markers associated with poorer cardiovascular or metabolic health, such as higher inflammation and elevated blood sugar. However, mothers’ observed behaviours in infancy did not show the same association.

Kiara DeWitt, a neurology registered nurse and lead educator of neurology and neuroscience at Cook Children’s Medical Center, tells HELLO! that these findings align with a framework known as the Father Vulnerability Hypothesis.

“I really think all of this discussion comes back to the Father Vulnerability Hypothesis,” she says. “The idea is that dads tend to be more sensitive to marital conflict or stress. As a result, their parenting and interactions with kids suffer more than mothers during times of family turmoil.”

How stress can impact a child’s development

According to the paediatric nurse, a father’s emotional tone isn’t just a social issue, but it can also become a biological one. “If a father responds to a child in a harsh way, that will affect how their body regulates stress,” she explains. “A dad’s negativity, lack of emotional availability or inconsistency can cause a child’s cortisol levels to be elevated for longer than ideal. Over time, that leads to problems with insulin sensitivity, blood pressure, and more.”

Cortisol is a key hormone in the body’s stress response. When it remains chronically elevated, it can influence blood vessels, metabolism, and inflammation, which are all bodily systems that are still developing rapidly in early childhood.

However, the flip side is encouraging, as warm, consistent fathering can help protect children against excessive stress. Kiara explains: “Consistent positive parenting and warmth from a father can help regulate that stress response system, leading to fewer negative effects on blood vessels and metabolism as kids grow up.”

© Getty Images

Children’s metabolic and cardiovascular health appeared to be impacted by their relationship with their father

Why fathers’ relationships may show up differently

There are many reasons why a father’s parenting style may have a different impact on their child compared to a mother’s. Kiara says that it may be because each parent will have different involvement in their child’s life and fulfil different roles.

“Discipline styles, expectations, and play may contrast between parents,” she says. “Fathers typically play more vigorously with their children, and that can cause higher peaks in heart rate and blood pressure during those bursts of positive stress. But if a father is negative or unpredictable during play, the stress response may become more pronounced.”

However, this doesn’t mean mothers are less important. “That isn’t to say mums don’t matter too. They do, but the stats will look different based on the roles each parent takes.”

© Getty Images/iStockphoto

The same impact wasn’t observed between mothers and their children

How the father-child relationship is part of a much bigger health puzzle

Of course, father-child interaction is just one factor among many that may influence a child’s cardiovascular and metabolic health, as the registered nurse explains. “Of course, there are thousands of other factors,” Kiara says. “Not getting enough sleep – less than eight hours per night – can increase cortisol and hunger hormones. Eating excess processed sugar can spike insulin resistance within a few weeks.

“Lack of exercise, say less than one hour of moderate movement per day, can decrease cardiovascular fitness. Genetics and prenatal lifestyle factors play a role, too. I mention all of this to say that how fathers interact with their children is only one factor affecting physiology.”

What this means for parents

For families, the takeaway isn’t to add another item to an already long list of parenting pressures. Instead, the research offers reassurance that small, everyday moments of connection matter. This can look like playing with your child attentively, being emotionally available and cooperating together as parents, combined with lifestyle factors such as good sleep, balanced nutrition and regular movement to raise healthy, balanced children.

New research has confirmed something experts have long suspected – that a child’s relationship with their parents can have a long-term impact on their wellbeing.
