CIC News will update this article as details emerge.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/canadavisaplus.com\/assessment?utm_source=cicnews.com&#038;utm_medium=article&#038;utm_campaign=2026-02-18_canada-announces-express-entry-categories-for-2026_71729\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">See your eligibility for all Express Entry categories and streams<br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Additional requirements for skilled military recruits<\/h2>\n<p>The military recruits category has additional requirements beyond the one year of eligible work experience.<\/p>\n<p>To qualify for the skilled military recruits category, an Express Entry candidate must also<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be serving in a recognized foreign military with at least ten years of continuous service;<\/li>\n<li>Have a full-time job offer for at least three years with the Canadian Armed Forces; and<\/li>\n<li>Have a post-secondary credential from a program of at least two years in length.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>About Express Entry<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/express-entry.html\">Express Entry<\/a> is the federal government&#8217;s flagship application management system for permanent residence applications.<\/p>\n<p>The government selects foreign nationals for permanent residence by issuing i<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/express-entry-invitation-to-apply-for-permanent-residence.html\">nvitations to apply<\/a> (ITAs) to top-ranking eligible candidates through the Express Entry system.<\/p>\n<p>To qualify for Express Entry, a candidate must have an intention to reside in Canada outside Quebec, and must meet the minimum requirements of at least one of the three Express-Entry managed federal immigration programs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/canadian-experience-class.html\">The Canadian Experience Class<\/a> (CEC).<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/federal-skilled-worker-program-fswp.html\">The Federal Skilled Worker Program<\/a> (FSWP).<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/canada-federal-skilled-trades-program-fstc.html\">The Federal Skilled Trades Program<\/a> (FSTP).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All programs require at least one year of full-time skilled work experience, defined as work in an occupation classified as TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 under Canada&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/noc2021.html\">National Occupation Classification<\/a> (NOC).<\/p>\n<p>All candidates must achieve a minimum level of proficiency in English or French, as demonstrated by completing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/language.html\">language test<\/a> from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/language.html\">government-approved third-party language testing provider<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Candidates are scored on the basis of Canada&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadavisa.com\/express-entry-comprehensive-ranking-system.html\">Comprehensive Ranking System<\/a> (CRS), which assigns each candidate profile a score from 0-1200, calculated on the basis of the candidate&#8217;s work experience, language proficiency, education, and age.<\/p>\n<p>For candidates immigrating with a spouse, their spouse&#8217;s Canadian work experience, education, and language proficiency also factor into their CRS score.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/canadavisaplus.com\/assessment?utm_source=cicnews.com&#038;utm_medium=article&#038;utm_campaign=2026-02-18_canada-announces-express-entry-categories-for-2026_71729\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">See your eligibility for all Express Entry categories and streams<br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>History of category-based selection<\/h3>\n<p>IRCC first instituted Express Entry categories in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cicnews.com\/2023\/05\/ircc-announces-new-selection-categories-for-express-entry-candidates-0535212.html\">May of 2023<\/a>, under former Immigration Minister Sean Fraser. At the time, category-based selection launched with six categories:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>French-language proficiency;<\/li>\n<li>Healthcare occupations;<\/li>\n<li>Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) occupations;<\/li>\n<li>Trades occupations;<\/li>\n<li>Transport occupations; and<\/li>\n<li>Agriculture and agri-food occupations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The above categories were maintained until <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cicnews.com\/2025\/02\/breaking-canada-announces-major-changes-to-express-entry-categories-0252116.html\">February 27, 2025<\/a>, when IRCC instituted a major overhaul of both current Express Entry categories and the occupations eligible to be selected under them.
