TAOISEACH MICHE\u00c1L MARTIN has said that a new meeting room in Government buildings at a cost of close to \u20ac1m will protect communications with world leaders.<\/p>\n

Martin made the remarks today at a Select Committee while discussing revised estimates for 2026 for the Department of Taoiseach.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0revised estimates provide more detail on allocations announced in the Budget.<\/p>\n

It sets out any changes that have been made and provides a more detailed breakdown of expenditure across all Government Departments.<\/p>\n

Labour TD Ged Nash noted in the revived estimates for 2026, there was a 184% increase in the spend on \u201cpremises expenses\u201d within the Department of Taoiseach.<\/p>\n

This figure stood at \u20ac522,000 last year but jumped up to \u20ac1.48m this year, an increase of \u20ac958,000.<\/p>\n

Nash said there was a reference to this increase as being needed to \u201cfulfil mandatory requirements for secure meeting facilities to allow continued engagement with international partners\u201d.<\/p>\n

In response, Martin noted that Ireland is a member of the Coalition of the Willing, a group of 34 countries that have pledged strengthened support for Ukraine in its war with Russia.<\/p>\n

\u201cTake meetings with the Coalition of the Willing,\u201d said Martin.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome of those meetings \u2013 not all \u2013 would have sensitive things said and you need \u2018Nato proof\u2019 secure facilities, that\u2019s a standard now that you need.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNato proof\u201d is a term used to describe equipment which has been approved and certified to meet the strict standards set out by Nato.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have one in the country,\u201d said Martin, \u201cand we need one in Government Buildings, for ease and so on.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s required because surveillance is everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

Such secure communications equipment are often called SCIFs (Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility), which is the term used by the US Department of Defence.<\/p>\n

They protect against electronic surveillance and suppress data leaks.<\/p>\n
