A \u201cmarked reduction of opportunities\u201d in the residential sector contributed to lower revenue and profit at Ground Construction Holdings last year, the employee-owned firm has said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Turnover fell 1.7 per cent from \u00a3100.1m to \u00a398.4m year on year, while the group\u2019s pre-tax profit dropped by a tenth to \u00a34.4m, according to its accounts for the 12 months to 30 June 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n

This resulted in a narrower margin of 4.4 per cent for the Hertfordshire-based company, down from 4.9 per cent in its 2024 financial year.<\/span><\/p>\n

Directors said the introduction in 2024 of the gateway two regulatory approval process for higher-risk buildings (HRBs) \u2013 <\/span>which has experienced a bottleneck<\/span><\/a> \u2013 \u201cresulted in a marked reduction of opportunities in the high-rise residential market in and around the London area, creating greater competition\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Contracting revenue from its main trading arm, Ground Construction Ltd, fell by 3 per cent from \u00a395.5m to \u00a392.4m.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ground Construction was ranked eighth in last year\u2019s<\/span> CN Specialists Index for concrete contractors<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The parent group\u2019s cash at hand fell from \u00a320.4m to \u00a314.4m and its short-term repayable loan debt almost tripled from \u00a31.4m to \u00a34m, according to the accounts.<\/span><\/p>\n

It held no long-term bank loans or overdrafts.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ground Construction Holdings has been an employee-owned trust (EOT) since 2021. Founder Trevor Diviney sold his shares to facilitate the transition but has remained involved as executive chairman.<\/span><\/p>\n

The latest accounts showed that \u00a35m in surplus cash or assets was transferred into the EOT during the year to pay Diviney, in line with the terms of the transition.<\/span><\/p>\n

The firm\u2019s wage bill was stable, rising just \u00a327,000 to reach \u00a37.7m in the year, despite the average monthly headcount increasing from 72 to 93 employees.<\/span><\/p>\n

Directors envisaged \u201ca lot more opportunity going forward for the business\u201d, as more residential HRBs obtain gateway two approval from the Building Safety Regulator.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
