{"id":892197,"date":"2026-03-18T02:08:48","date_gmt":"2026-03-18T07:08:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2026\/03\/18\/travis-perkins-loss-triples-as-construction-weakness-and-impairments-bite\/"},"modified":"2026-03-18T02:08:48","modified_gmt":"2026-03-18T07:08:48","slug":"travis-perkins-loss-triples-as-construction-weakness-and-impairments-bite","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2026\/03\/18\/travis-perkins-loss-triples-as-construction-weakness-and-impairments-bite\/","title":{"rendered":"Travis Perkins loss triples as construction weakness and impairments bite"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"wrapper_sleeve\">\n<p><img width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.ca.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2020\/06\/Travis-Perkins_generic.png\"  decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"high\"  alt=\"Travis-Perkins_generic.png\"><\/p>\n<p>Credit: Scott Lewis | Flickr<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>Travis Perkins has reported a deeper full-year pre-tax loss due to weak construction activity and impairments among some of its subsidiaries.<\/p>\n<p>The UK\u2019s largest building materials supplier saw its statutory pre-tax loss more than triple from \u00a338.4m to \u00a3134.7m in the year to 31 December 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Revenue was stable at \u00a34.56bn, down by 0.9 per cent on the previous year\u2019s \u00a34.61bn.<\/p>\n<p>Chief executive Gavin Slark said the loss was \u201cprimarily due to accounting impairments\u201d from the group\u2019s \u201cperennially loss-making\u201d Toolstation Benelux business and \u201csome of the smaller merchanting businesses in the UK\u201d such as the CCF drylining subsidiary.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the firm\u2019s adjusted operating profit of \u00a3133.4m \u2013 down from the previous year\u2019s \u00a3151.8m \u2013 aligned with market expectations.<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s announcement described a \u201cchallenging market backdrop for UK construction activity\u201d, with lower trading volumes in Travis Perkins\u2019 core Merchanting division in London and the South East.<\/p>\n<p>This continued a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/financial\/travis-perkins-outlook-improves-despite-h1-revenue-fall-05-08-2025\/\">trend seen earlier in the year<\/a>, when Travis Perkins chair Geoff Drabble described a \u201cdifficult\u201d first quarter with a loss of market share and revenue decrease in the Merchanting division.<\/p>\n<p>Travis Perkins held \u00a37.2m in short-term loans and borrowings, while long-term debt was stable at \u00a3419.4m compared to \u00a3421.8m in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Net cash before leases totalled \u00a31m \u2013 marking the first positive total for almost 30 years, according to today\u2019s Stock Exchange announcement.<\/p>\n<p>And the firm\u2019s liquidity improved with cash at hand almost doubling from \u00a3244.4m to \u00a3426.9m in the course of the year.<\/p>\n<p>This gives Travis Perkins \u201cvery substantial liquidity headroom\u201d in the short term, said Slark, who joined the group as chief executive this January.<\/p>\n<p>But directors recommend a lower final dividend of \u00a315.8m compared with \u00a319.1m in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe trading environment since the start of the year has remained subdued and this reflects a continuation of the weak UK construction activity figures reported for the final quarter of 2025,\u201d the firm said in its results announcement.<\/p>\n<p>Slark said the group will focus on blending \u201ca branch-based, sales-led culture with a disciplined approach on margin, on costs and on capital allocation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He described the next few months as \u201ca potentially rocky road to travel\u201d given the ongoing Middle East conflict.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think in terms of the direct impact of the conflict at the moment on our business this year, a lot of our UK-based suppliers would be quite energy intensive, so we anticipate some pricing pressure coming through from higher energy costs from our supplier base.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/sections\/cn-intelligence\/companies\/\" target=\"_blank\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/\"><\/a><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/cn-intelligence\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.ca.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2025\/05\/CN-intelligence-article-promo-200-x-200-px.webp\" alt width=\"250\" height=\"250\"  ><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At CN Intelligence you can view and filter seven years\u2019 worth of detailed financial information on the top UK construction firms via our interactive dashboards.
