The first certification, Safety for Eyes, takes care of the blue light emissions — the wavelength which is associated the most with eye strain and disturbed sleep — confirming that the television meets the safe thresholds for prolonged viewing sessions.

The second one, Circadian Rhythm Display (CRD) verification goes a step further by confirming that the TV actually mimics the pattern of natural light. The television leans toward producing cooler tones during the day, warmer tones in the evening, and, most importantly, dials down blue light at night.

<figure data-wp-context="{"imageId":"69b56bd3a0fff"}" data-wp-interactive="core/image">
Samsung

How do the compatible TVs pull this off?

Basically, it doesn’t force your brain into thinking that it’s noon by producing cool light, when it’s midnight, so that viewing the television doesn’t disrupt your sleep cycle. OLED is absolutely undefeated when it comes to contrast and viewing angle. If I had the budget to build a dedicated home theater space in my home, and money was no object, I would be mounting the largest OLED TV I could get my hands on in that space. Something like LG’s 98-inch G5 OLED, which would run me a cool $25,000.

Alas, most of us don’t have that kind of pocket change lying around, and most homes don’t have purpose-built blacked-out home theaters. For most of us with regular living rooms in our homes or apartments, we’re contending with windows, lamps and overhead lights in a space that serves as the living center of our home. This is where our kids watch cartoons, where we catch the big game and where we do family movie nights. I’m increasingly skeptical that OLED is the best choice for most families. MiniLED TVs are cheaper, brighter and nearly as stunning.

Read more

     Sonos is wading into budget speaker waters with the new Era 100 SL speaker

      Sonos stripped out the voice assistant, kept everything that actually matters, and somehow made a better speaker in the process.

The new Era 100 SL is the company’s latest compact wireless speaker, and it’s essentially the Era 100’s quieter sibling: same stellar audio DNA, just without built-in voice control.

No voice assistant means it won’t accidentally order you a pizza mid-playlist, which depending on your willpower is either a bug or a feature.
