\u201cTogether, we will craft a fresh narrative for our city,\u201d declared Zohran Mamdani during his inauguration speech on Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis narrative won\u2019t depict a city governed solely by the elite 1 percent, nor will it portray a city divided into rich and poor factions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mamdani seems to be continuing where former Mayor Bill de Blasio left off, by criticizing the affluent and creating a sense of division.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t accurate then, and it remains inaccurate now.<\/p>\n

When have the wealthy truly stood in opposition to the less fortunate in New York City?<\/p>\n

The top 1% of earners pay 46% of the city\u2019s budget \u2014 a budget, by the way, that at $116 billion equals that of the spending for the entire state of Florida.<\/p>\n

Were the rich \u201cversus\u201d the poor when they funded billions in social services? <\/p>\n

When de\u2009Blasio wasted $1 billion on his wife\u2019s pointless Thrive mental-health program? <\/p>\n

When Mayor Eric Adams sheltered and fed 210,000 migrants from President Joe Biden\u2019s open border?<\/p>\n

Thanks to Wall Street bankers, tech-company innovators and dreamers of all sorts who want to live in this city, Mamdani has a tax base of which most leaders can only dream.<\/p>\n

To him, it is still not enough. <\/p>\n

And every problem is their fault.<\/p>\n

Mamdani spun a dystopian fantasyland in his speech, asking \u201cwho does New York belong to\u201d and then claiming \u201cfor much of our history . . . it belongs only to the wealthy and well-connected.\u201d<\/p>\n

What is he talking about?! <\/p>\n

We must have missed the City Council meetings where committee chairs wore cravats and monocles. <\/p>\n

For much of our recent history, New York has had one-party rule: the Democrats. <\/p>\n

Is he suggesting Koch, Dinkins, de Blasio and Adams were oligarchs?<\/p>\n

Mamdani railed against \u201ccrowded classrooms and public-housing developments where the elevators sit out of order.\u201d <\/p>\n

Who is to blame for that, we wonder? <\/p>\n

If classrooms are crowded, it\u2019s because parents want to get their kids into the best schools, because the union refuses to hold bad teachers to account. <\/p>\n

With public housing, they\u2019ve made residents feel less safe by letting gang members go free without bail.<\/p>\n

We spent more per student than almost anywhere else in America. <\/p>\n

Our welfare budget is the size of a small country. <\/p>\n

Yet Mamdani claimed his predecessors were scared to do things.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will govern expansively and audaciously,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

\u201cTo those who insist that the era of big government is over, hear me when I say this \u2014 no longer will City Hall hesitate to use its power to improve New Yorkers\u2019 lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

It is not how much money we\u2019re spending, but the bad ideas that never change. <\/p>\n

Before Mayor Mamdani starts writing more checks, maybe he should consider that he needs better solutions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
