Enyimba have confirmed the appointment of former Super Eagles<\/a> defender Uche Okechukwu as the club\u2019s new sporting director, Soccernet.ng reports<\/strong>.<\/p>\n With that move, the Aba Elephants have handed a pivotal leadership role to one of the most respected figures in Nigerian<\/a> football.<\/p>\n Okechukwu, widely known by his nickname \u2018the Gentle Giant’, takes over following the resignation of the club\u2019s previous sporting director. His appointment was formally communicated in a letter signed by Enyimba chairman Nwankwo Kanu,<\/a> who praised the former international\u2019s experience and character.<\/p>\n Kanu said the club\u2019s hierarchy believes Okechukwu\u2019s background as an elite player and his understanding of football structures will be central to Enyimba\u2019s long-term ambitions. His performances earned him a move to Europe in 1990, when he joined Br\u00f8ndby in Denmark.<\/p>\n At Br\u00f8ndby, Okechukwu quickly established himself as a first-team regular, winning two Danish league titles and playing a key role in the club\u2019s run to the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup in 1990\u201391. His influence was such that he was named Br\u00f8ndby\u2019s Player of the Year in 1992.<\/p>\n A transfer to Fenerbah\u00e7e<\/a> followed in 1993, where he enjoyed further success, winning two Turkish league titles and forming one of the division\u2019s most reliable defensive partnerships. He would later return to Nigeria towards the end of his playing career, featuring for Ocean Boys and Bayelsa United.<\/p>\n Internationally, Okechukwu was a cornerstone of Nigeria\u2019s golden generation. He won the Africa Cup of Nations<\/a> in 1994, featured at two World Cups and was part of the celebrated Olympic team that claimed gold in Atlanta in 1996.
