That landed him on the doorstep of the Divisional Round game <a href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/nfl\/live\/patriots-return-to-afc-title-game-for-first-time-in-7-years-send-texans-into-offseason-of-questions-about-cj-stroud-183002188.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"(opens in a new tab)\">between the Houston Texans and New England Patriots<\/a>, where Barr decided that Texans quarterback <a href=\"https:\/\/vikingsterritory.com\/2025\/news\/top_news\/nfl-starting-qb-rankings-vikingsterritory\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"(opens in a new tab)\">C.J. Stroud<\/a> was basically a fraud.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Barr issued a direct verdict that hit right as Houston collapsed, turning Stroud into the week\u2019s lightning rod.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Faced with a halftime decision to bench Stroud, who had played miserably, Houston opted to sink with him. Barr claimed Stroud was just being himself: a quarterback who isn\u2019t very productive.<\/p>\n<h2>Football Anthony Barr Chides C.J. Mandatory Credit: Jeffrey Becker-Imagn Images.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>The Tweet from Barr<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At halftime, after Stroud\u2019s mind-boggling struggles in the 1st and 2nd quarters, ESPN\u2019s Ryan Clark pounded the table for Stroud, insisting the Texans leave him in the lineup to get some redemption. The plan ultimately failed \u2014 horribly \u2014 but before that unfolded, Barr tweeted about Stroud.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is Ryan Clark yelling about? Time for CJ to show you that he\u2019s the guy ..? This is who CJ is,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AnthonyBarr\/status\/2013005715648950373\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"(opens in a new tab)\">he posted on social media<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Over 170,000 people saw the Barr tweet. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Stroud\u2019s Embarrassing Playoff Stats<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In two postseason games this season, Stroud averaged 231 passing yards per game, chipping in 2 total touchdowns, 5 interceptions, and 5 fumbles.<\/p>\n<p>Until 2025, no quarterback in NFL history had produced 5 picks and 5 fumbles in a single postseason. Stroud committed the blunder in two games. <\/p>\n<p>Stroud\u2019s head coach, DeMeco Ryans, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AdamJWexler\/status\/2013035446557634622\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"(opens in a new tab)\">said about Stroud<\/a> after the game, \u201cC.J.\u2019s our guy. I believed that he could come back out in the second half and flip it. I believed he could play better, and he did that in the second half. He did play better. We had some positive drives there in the second half.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe he would be that, and he did that. As I always tell our guys at halftime, it really doesn\u2019t matter what happened in the first half. You have to flush it, remove it, and go out and finish the right way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span><em>SI.com<\/em>\u2018s<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/texans\/onsi\/news\/demeco-ryans-faith-houston-texans-qb-cj-stroud-could-be-costly\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"(opens in a new tab)\">Keith Cumming wrote<\/a> about Ryans\u2019 choice to leave Stroud in the game, \u201cSimply persevering with Stroud was something Ryans felt he had to do for short and longer-term reasons, but winning the ball game would have probably led him to insert Mills. Alas, the fateful decision to limp on with Stroud gradually inched the Texans toward the playoff exit door, with the damage done to their quarterback\u2019s fractured confidence potentially now being a whole lot worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFurthermore, with the benefit of hindsight, Ryans protecting Stroud from the mental torture he endured by everyone wanting to tough it out should have undoubtedly taken precedence. Heaven knows, pulling a struggling pitcher and going to the bullpen is always the decision of the coach \u2014 not the player.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Make no mistake: the Texans had a defense ready to win a Super Bowl. <\/p>\n<p>Cummings added, \u201cNow that the season smashed straight into the bumpers in Foxborough, it\u2019s inevitable that Ryans and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/sports\/nfl\/houston-texans-join-growing-nfl-trend-with-front-office-shake-up-in-preparation-for-2025-season\/ar-AA1GnZwP?apiversion=v2&#038;domshim=1&#038;noservercache=1&#038;noservertelemetry=1&#038;batchservertelemetry=1&#038;renderwebcomponents=1&#038;wcseo=1\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"(opens in a new tab)\">Texans front office<\/a> will have to confront the harsh reality that they might just be backing the wrong guy under center.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Davis Mills as the Alternative<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So, what will the Texans do after Stroud\u2019s struggles? They almost certainly won\u2019t trade him or give up on him altogether. His performance against the Patriots proved that he cannot be wholly trusted \u2014 as Barr pointed out in his tweet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Now What for Stroud?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Of course, the synchronization is just awful for Stroud personally. Contract talks were on the way this offseason, and the market has been clear in recent years \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/vikingsterritory.com\/2026\/vikings-insider\/the-gm-view\/vikings-2026-quarterback-plan-jj-mccarthy\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"(opens in a new tab)\">elite quarterbacks<\/a> name their price. Houston now has to pause and reassess whether an extension even belongs on the calendar, let alone a five-year, $300 million commitment. Paying that kind of money off the back of a performance like the Patriots game would teeter on the edge of organizational malpractice.<\/p>\n<p>Stroud ran head-first into the most unforgiving moment on the NFL calendar. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.profootballnetwork.com\/nfl-world-espn-analyst-ryan-clark-sam-darnold-comment\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"(opens in a new tab)\">Ryan Clark<\/a> thought Stroud might recover during the game. Barr predicted otherwise.
