The war against Netflix\u2019s acquisition of Warner Bros.<\/a> has found another soldier in James Cameron. People and parties<\/a> all have different reasons<\/a> for not wanting this merger, and in Cameron\u2019s case, it\u2019s because of the harm done to movie theaters.<\/p>\n

Recently, the Avatar\u00a0<\/em>director told Deadline<\/a> about the open secret that is Netflix \u201c[wanting] to replace theatrical,\u201d even as it gives movies like\u00a0Frankenstein\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Wake Up Dead Man\u00a0<\/em>brief runs on the big screen. Given that he\u2019s old school, and because his movies makes a\u00a0lot\u00a0<\/em>of money, Cameron admitted to finding \u201csomething sacred\u201d about theatrical movies, and doesn\u2019t think streaming should be dominant in the industry.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t just steamroll theatrical out of existence,\u201d he said, \u201cand I\u2019m going to stay opposed to that. [\u2026] If they prevail in this [merger], they\u2019ll become a major player, and we\u2019re down to half the number of majors that existed when I came into the business. This is going to sort itself out, but I\u2019m pretty four-square on the side of let\u2019s keep that theatrical experience alive.\u201d<\/p>\n

Netflix has already stated it\u2019ll honor Warner Bros.\u2019 history of putting movies in theaters, with the caveat that theatrical windows may be shorter<\/a> than the standard 45 days. Cameron knows that modification is likely, but he\u2019ll still do what he can to make people go to movie theaters by\u2026well, doing what James Cameron does. \u201cI primarily make movies for theaters, [but] a good story is a good story. You put it on the smallest screen you want, it\u2019s still a good story. You look at it through a fricking pinhole, it\u2019s still a good story, right?\u201d<\/p>\n

To that end,\u00a0Avatar: Fire and Ash\u00a0<\/em>hits theaters on Friday, and like the last two\u00a0Avatar\u00a0<\/em>movies, it\u2019ll likely get a lot of butts in theatrical seats.<\/p>\n
