{"id":885407,"date":"2026-01-16T16:33:18","date_gmt":"2026-01-16T22:33:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2026\/01\/16\/potteries-contractor-files-for-administration\/"},"modified":"2026-01-16T16:33:18","modified_gmt":"2026-01-16T22:33:18","slug":"potteries-contractor-files-for-administration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2026\/01\/16\/potteries-contractor-files-for-administration\/","title":{"rendered":"Potteries contractor files for administration"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"wrapper_sleeve\">\n<p><img width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.ca.emap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2023\/09\/Padlock_administrations_generic.jpg\"  decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"high\"  alt=\"Padlock_administrations_generic.jpg\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Groundworks and civils contractor Caldwell Construction Ltd has filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators as it scrambles to find a buyer and fend off creditors.<\/p>\n<p>The notice was filed yesterday (14 January).<\/p>\n<p>Founded in 2007, the firm specialises in delivering groundworks for housebuilders and developers in the Midlands, North West and Yorkshire.<\/p>\n<p>Its most recent accounts, covering the year to 31 March 2025, showed that Stoke-based Caldwell employed a monthly average of 49 staff.<\/p>\n<p>Caldwell\u2019s directors sounded optimistic in the latest accounts, which showed a pre-tax profit of \u00a3130,884 from turnover of \u00a358.4m.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe directors aim to follow the same management policies that have resulted in significant growth over the past five years,\u201d the accounts said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey consider that the next year will show further growth in sales from continuing operations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The firm had undertaken a \u201cstrategic financial review which resulted in significant additional funding being introduced in the year and a clear plan to manage working capital\u201d, the directors noted.<\/p>\n<p>They added: \u201cThis will enable the business to capitalise on considerable growth potential as housebuilding accelerates in line with government targets as recently reported in mainstream media post-November 2025 budget.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The latest accounts showed the firm\u2019s cash at hand more than halved from \u00a35.7m to \u00a32m, and the firm\u2019s short-term repayable bank loans grew sixfold to \u00a32.5m.<\/p>\n<p>Loans due for repayment after 12 months fell from \u00a31.7m to \u00a3723,849, though.<\/p>\n<p>While turnover was down on the previous year\u2019s \u00a365.4m, Caldwell\u2019s restated 2024 figures delivered a pre-tax loss of \u00a32.9m after an internal review resulted in \u00a35.1m of exceptional costs.<\/p>\n<p>This restatement also resulted in the shareholders repaying their \u00a32m recommended dividend, the accounts said.<\/p>\n<p>According to data intelligence provider Glenigan, the firm has a dozen active projects, including work for Ascena Developments on a \u00a375.1m residential scheme in Manchester that is due for imminent completion.<\/p>\n<p>Caldwell\u2019s other residential groundworks jobs in North West England include Kellen Homes\u2019 \u00a330m scheme in Manchester and for Prospect Homes\u2019 \u00a332m job in Widnes, said Glenigan.<\/p>\n<p>Calls to the firm\u2019s office number went unanswered.<\/p>\n<p><em>*Update:\u00a0PKF Littlejohn Advisory was appointed as administrators of Caldwell Construction Ltd after this story was published<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/financial\/administrations\/potteries-contractor-files-for-administration-15-01-2026\/\" class=\"button purchase\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Read More<\/a><br \/>\n Ben Vogel<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Groundworks and civils contractor Caldwell Construction Ltd has filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators as it scrambles to find a buyer and fend off creditors.
