O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story\u00a0<\/em><\/h2>\n<figure>\n\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1296\" height=\"730\" alt data-old-src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/themes\/vip\/pmc-hollywoodreporter-2021\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/acs_110_0803-h_2016.jpg?w=1296\"><figcaption>\n\t\t\t\t\tImage Credit: Courtesy of Prashant Gupta\/FX\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div>\n<p>\n\tThe first extension of <em>American Horror Story<\/em>, Ryan Murphy\u2019s debut installment of <em>American Crime Story<\/em>, centered around O.J. Simpson, came out on Feb. 2, 2016. It followed the late NFL player\u2019s infamous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/gallery\/oj-simpson-murder-case-at-712207\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">murder trial<\/a>, of which he was found not guilty for the murders of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tAt the 68th Primetime Emmy Awards, held in September, <em>The People v. O. J. Simpson <\/em>was a hit, with a total of nine wins (accompanied by its 22 overall nominations). The series won best limited series; lead actor in a limited series (Courtney B. Vance); lead actress in a limited series (Sarah Paulson); best supporting actor in a limited series (Sterling K. Brown); and outstanding writing for a limited series, movie or dramatic special, among others.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIn <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-reviews\/people-v-oj-simpson-american-856052\/\"><em>THR<\/em>\u2019s original review<\/a> of the series, chief TV critic Daniel Fienberg wrote, \u201c<em>The People v. O.J.<\/em> has a welcomely, wonky interest in the legal process, which is the best thing that could happen to the series in this era of <em>Serial<\/em> and <em>The Jinx<\/em> and <em>Making a Murderer<\/em>. Murphy, so frequently a master of visceral and emotional manipulation, proves adept at following systematic manipulation, whether it\u2019s in jury selection, evidence presentation or witness wrangling. A stark contrast to other movies in the Disney-backed franchise, the risk of its raunchiness certainly paid off, as the film landed as the sixth highest-grossing movie of the year domestically, landing at ninth worldwide.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIts success spawned a number of follow-ups, including <em>Deadpool 2<\/em> (2018) and <em>Deadpool &#038; Wolverine<\/em> (2024), with Reynolds <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/ryan-reynolds-deadpool-x-men-movie-1236200391\/\">working <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/ryan-reynolds-deadpool-x-men-movie-1236200391\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">o<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/ryan-reynolds-deadpool-x-men-movie-1236200391\/\">n another film<\/a> including the character and a few of Wade Wilson\u2019s X-Men confidants.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<em>THR<\/em> also predicted the commercial success of the first <em>Deadpool<\/em> in its <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/deadpool-film-review-862293\/\">2016 film review<\/a>: \u201cIt takes a little while to get in gear \u2014 or perhaps just to adjust to what\u2019s going on here \u2014 but once it does, <em>Deadpool<\/em> drops trou to reveal itself as a really raunchy, very dirty and pretty funny goof on the entire superhero ethos, as well as the first Marvel film to irreverently trash the brand. It was one of the first sequel series before many legacy TV shows created their own follow-ups, one that harped on the nostalgia factor that the internet is now tapping into in 2026, 10 years later.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tFienberg called out <em>Fuller House<\/em>\u2019s tendency to rely on its predecessor in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-reviews\/fuller-house-tv-review-868334\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>THR<\/em>\u2019s 2016 review<\/a>, writing, \u201cThe <em>Fuller House<\/em> premiere is almost non-stop references to the original series, filling-in-the-gaps exposition and then a climactic homage to the <em>Full House<\/em> pilot that includes both clips from that series and reenactment. It has no desire to live as its own thing and it\u2019s a trend that continues in the early episodes. And it would be an understatement to say the film was a success.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tAt the time, it became the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/box-office-milestone-zootopia-zooms-899751\/\">fourth animated film<\/a> in history to ever cross the $1 billion mark, landing as the fourth top-grossing worldwide movie of the year. That success parlayed itself quite well to <em>Zootopia 2<\/em>, which also became the fastest animated and PG-rated movie to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/zootopia-2-box-office-zooms-past-1-billion-1236448881\/\">pass $1 billion<\/a>. It was the first time the characters of Batman and Superman were seen on-screen together in a live-action adaptation, plus the first live-action depiction of Wonder Woman. But it was met with <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/batman-v-superman-draws-mixed-877635\/\">mixed reviews<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tWhile <em>Dawn of Justice<\/em> was muddly received, it was a triumph for Warner Bros. in 2016. It was the seventh highest-grossing worldwide movie that year; also placing eighth among the domestic box office. However, <em>THR<\/em> was on the side of not really enjoying the movie, writing in the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/batman-v-superman-dawn-justice-review-877477\/\">2016 review<\/a> that \u201cthe film may be imposing, but it\u2019s not fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cThe main issue facing the writers of a superhero smackdown like this is concocting a reason why, given all the evil out there, they have to fight each other \u2014 as well as, in this case, coming up with a way to level the playing field when one hero is essentially immortal and the other is just a really buff rich guy with a costume and lots of gizmos. Screenwriters Chris Terrio (<em>Argo<\/em>) and David S. On April 15, Neel Sethi stepped into Mowgli\u2019s shoes, supported by a star-studded voice cast including Idris Elba, Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson. It was one of Disney\u2019s first live-action adaptations to utilize CGI to create real-life animals, and its box office success very likely influenced a slew of similar remakes to come.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<em>The Jungle Book<\/em> ranks as the fifth highest-grossing film of 2016, both worldwide and domestically. The movie also notably won an Oscar in 2017 for best visual effects, a notion that <em>THR<\/em> commended in the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/jungle-book-film-review-880131\/\">2016 film review<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cBut even as the drama and its treatment become increasingly conventional and familiar as the film moves toward its patly (and arguably overly) audience-pleasing wrap-up, the exceptional visual quality and lifelike animal renditions remain stunning throughout. And Marvel fans surely showed out in theaters after it was released on May 6, 2016 to support the theatrical event.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<em>Civil War <\/em>became the 25th movie to ever <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/box-office-milestone-captain-america-896018\/\">cross the $1 billion<\/a> mark in May, and is the highest-grossing worldwide film of 2016. (It\u2019s third on the domestic list, falling only behind two other Disney flicks.)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<em>THR\u2019<\/em>s film critic Sheri Linden forecasted <em>Civil War<\/em>\u2019s profit in her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/captain-america-civil-war-film-882017\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2016 review<\/a>, writing, \u201cAs the third Captain America film jump-starts the summer movie season, and something called Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, its box-office muscle is beyond question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cLike the previous Captain America feature, 2014\u2019s The Winter Soldier, the film was scripted by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, with Anthony and Joe Russo at the helm. On July 15, 2026, audiences were transformed to 1980s Indiana, where a group of children were tasked with solving strange mysteries, and offscreen, they became real-life superstars overnight.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIn his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-reviews\/winona-ryder-netflixs-stranger-things-909336\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2016 TV review<\/a>, Fienberg referenced Netflix\u2019s <em>Fuller House<\/em>, which debuted in the same year, writing, \u201cUnlike <em>Fuller House<\/em>, the <em>Stranger Things<\/em> approach to nostalgia isn\u2019t solely parasitic, but it also isn\u2019t [Stephen] King\u2019s conflicted prism on the past, that the good old days weren\u2019t all that much better even if their songs were catchier and their snack foods tastier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tHe also commended the cast\u2019s performances: \u201cYou care what happens to the characters in <em>Stranger Things<\/em> because they\u2019re written authentically and they\u2019re cast exceptionally, especially when it comes to the kids. [Millie Bobbie] Brown, one of the few watchable parts of BBC America\u2019s obnoxiously cryptic <em>Intruders<\/em>, makes Eleven menacing, sad, funny and startlingly sweet, especially in scenes shared with [Finn] Wolfhard. [Gaten] Matarazzo\u2019s Dustin, short on teeth but long on hilarious indignation, grew on me with each episode, as did Nancy, with [Natalia] Dyer nailing probably the season\u2019s standout character journey. The story spotlights Mia (Emma Stone), an aspiring actress, and Sebastian (Ryan Gosling), a jazz pianist, who are trying to make it big in Los Angeles, of course.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\tStone\u2019s performance earned the actress her first Oscar, and <em>La La Land<\/em> went on to win a total of six awards (including best director for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-features\/la-la-land-unrealistic-hollywood-dream-critical-acclaim-942793\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Damien Chazelle<\/a>). On Dec. 16, Diego Luna made his debut as Cassian Andor, which led to a sprawling history within the franchise \u2014 and the box office points to just how successful this film was.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<em>Rogue One<\/em> landed as the highest-grossing domestic film of 2016, placing second in the worldwide gross, second only to <em>Captain America: Civil War<\/em>.
