Tensions between the United States, Denmark and Greenland have escalated. US Special Envoy to Greenland Jeff Landry accused Denmark of \u201creoccupying\u201d Greenland after World War II by \u201cignoring UN protocol,\u201d reviving a historical argument as Washington weighs its options over the Arctic island.<\/p>\n

Landry, the Governor of Louisiana appointed by US President Donald Trump<\/a> as special envoy, stressed that history must inform current debates over Greenland\u2019s future.<\/p>\n

\n

\u2018History matters\u2019: Landry invokes WWII role<\/h2>\n

Writing on X, formerly Twitter, Landry said the United States protected Greenland\u2019s sovereignty when Denmark<\/a> could not.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cHistory matters. The U.S. defended Greenland\u2019s sovereignty during WWII when Denmark couldn\u2019t. After the war, Denmark re-occupied it\u2014side stepping and ignoring UN protocol. This should be about hospitality, not hostility,\u201d Landry wrote.<\/p>\n

Landry argued that when Denmark was occupied by Nazi Germany, the US stepped in to ensure Greenland\u2019s security, and that Copenhagen\u2019s post-war return to the island violated international norms.<\/p>\n

\n

Claims of UN protocol violations<\/h2>\n

Landry has repeatedly claimed that Denmark re-established control over Greenland after the war \u201cin circumvention of UN norms and protocols,\u201d framing the issue as one of unresolved historical legitimacy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

He said the United States\u2019 approach toward Greenland should be seen as cooperative rather than aggressive.<\/p>\n

Trump<\/a> has argued that Greenland is \u201csurrounded\u201d by Russian and Chinese fleets and is therefore vital to US defence, dismissing the island\u2019s current protection as inadequate.<\/p>\n

Trump warned he would not allow US adversaries to gain a foothold in the region.<\/p>\n

Trump reiterated his stance: \u201cI\u2019d rather make a deal, but one way or the other, we\u2019re going to have Greenland.\u201d<\/p>\n

Denmark and Greenland push back<\/h2>\n

Denmark has firmly rejected any suggestion of a US takeover. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that an American annexation of Greenland would effectively end NATO.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI would therefore strongly urge the United States to stop the threats against a historically close ally and against another country and another people who have said very clearly that they are not for sale,\u201d Frederiksen said.<\/p>\n

She stressed that regional security is already guaranteed through existing international agreements and NATO membership.<\/p>\n

Greenland leaders assert right to decide future<\/h2>\n

Greenland government has also rejected US pressure<\/a>. Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen<\/a> and leaders of the island\u2019s four other parliamentary parties issued a joint statement insisting Greenland\u2019s future lies solely with its people.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

They called for an end to what they described as US disrespect.<\/p>\n

Diplomatic strain deepens<\/h2>\n

With Washington openly considering a range of options \u2014 including military force \u2014 the dispute has become one of the most serious rifts between NATO allies in recent years, raising questions about sovereignty, Arctic security and the future balance of power in the region.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
