{"id":884489,"date":"2026-01-12T07:25:02","date_gmt":"2026-01-12T13:25:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2026\/01\/12\/workers-rehired-as-new-managers-revive-dicky-bill-salad-farms\/"},"modified":"2026-01-12T07:25:02","modified_gmt":"2026-01-12T13:25:02","slug":"workers-rehired-as-new-managers-revive-dicky-bill-salad-farms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2026\/01\/12\/workers-rehired-as-new-managers-revive-dicky-bill-salad-farms\/","title":{"rendered":"Workers rehired as new managers revive Dicky Bill salad farms"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Two separate businesses will take over failed salad operator Dicky Bill&#8217;s farms in Victoria and Queensland, with some staff already back at work.<\/p>\n<p>About 165 workers lost their jobs when the company went into administration in November 2025, with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-12-12\/dicky-bill-salad-farm-10m-debt-blow\/105904126\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105904126\">debts estimated at up to $10 million.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hussey &#038; Co will run the farm at Maffra, about 220km east of Melbourne, while Riviera Farms will take over the Drinan operation, near Bundaberg, 350km north of Brisbane.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Both companies are based in Victoria.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Riviera Farms managing director Nelson Cox said that two former staff members had already been rehired, with three more expected to start work in the coming weeks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"EmphasisedText\">\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;They&#8217;re very good staff \u2026 all people that have worked on the farm, so they know the farm,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span>  he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;A different area has different growing challenges than what we have, so to get that knowledge has been really great.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re glad to be able to fill that gap and make up a bit for what&#8217;s happened.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure data-print=\"inline-media\" data-component=\"Figure\" id=\"106206582\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/imageproxy\/106206582\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The sun setting over a corn crop in Queensland\"  src=\"https:\/\/live-production.wcms.abc-cdn.net.au\/e4f45bd2f799ed683b4093fabf656ad3?impolicy=wcms_crop_resize&#038;cropH=744&#038;cropW=1116&#038;xPos=27&#038;yPos=0&#038;width=862&#038;height=575\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"><\/p>\n<\/div><figcaption>\n<p data-component=\"Typography\">The farm at Drinan, near Bundaberg, produced a range of winter crops, including corn. <cite>(<span>Supplied: Dicky Bill<\/span>)<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Mr Cox said planting for the winter crop was expected to start in February, and on-site processing would also continue.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The site was originally doing some washing, so we&#8217;ll just have to move some machinery back to get it set up,&#8221; he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"EmphasisedText\">\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I think once we&#8217;re set up, it will be around the 30 to 40 staff there through winter production.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p>Mr Cox said it was disappointing Dicky Bill had ceased operations, but trading conditions had been tough across the board.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Sadly, it&#8217;s probably a legacy of what the horticultural industry&#8217;s gone through in the last three years,&#8221; he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s certainly been trying times.<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"EmphasisedText\">\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I think the horticultural industry in general is certainly looking for some fresh air, so hopefully we can do that.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p>A fifth-generation family-owned farm business, Riviera Farms came to national prominence in 2022 when they <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2022-12-22\/noxious-weed-spinach-poison-thornapple-explainer\/101800170\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/101800170\">were the source of a spinach contamination outbreak<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mr Cox said adding the Queensland operation broadened its production portfolio, which already included farms in Victoria, Tasmania, Western Australia and New South Wales.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We do struggle in the winter months with growing; it can get quite cold down in Victoria,&#8221; he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our customers expect a consistent 12-month supply, so we took the opportunity to go to Bundaberg.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 data-component=\"Heading\">Victorian salad factory to remain closed<\/h2>\n<p>In Victoria, Hussey &#038; Co already operates a farm at Newry in Gippsland and has a salad processing plant at Somerville on the Mornington Peninsula. <cite>(<span>ABC News: Emma Field<\/span>)<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The company already operates a salad farm at Newry, close to the Maffra site, a farm and factory at Somerville on Victoria&#8217;s Mornington Peninsula, and farms and processing facilities south of Perth in WA.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"EmphasisedText\">\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We needed more land to grow our produce and so we&#8217;ll basically really be using that property for growing produce, not necessarily processing,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span>  Mr Haw said.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Hussey &#038;
