A contractor has been appointed to convert part of a Stevenage town centre car park into a construction training facility for North Hertfordshire College.<\/p>\n

R G Carter Cambridge signed a \u00a34.6m contract to deliver the six-month refurbishment project, which involves fitting out the ground floor of the St George\u2019s Way multi-storey car park.<\/p>\n

The deal was procured by Stevenage Borough Council under an open competition below-threshold route.<\/p>\n

The scheme will create a new engineering and construction campus for the college, replacing its existing site at Argyle Way.<\/p>\n

It will provide approximately 3,450 square metres of workshops, classrooms and welfare space, including full mechanical and electrical fit-out.<\/p>\n

The campus will occupy the area formerly used by Stevenage\u2019s indoor market, which is being relocated by the council to vacant ground-floor units at a site around 50 metres from the existing facility.<\/p>\n

Planning permission for the change of use was granted in July.<\/p>\n

Minor alterations to the facade include new louvred panels and mechanical ventilation ducts, while existing entrances will be retained.<\/p>\n

The site sits outside the primary retail frontage but within the designated town centre area.<\/p>\n

Saunders Partnership is the architect for the scheme, which is part of the borough\u2019s wider regeneration programme.<\/p>\n

Construction is scheduled to complete in June 2026.<\/p>\n
