Photo by Thor Wegner DeFodi Images\/IMAGO<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Nigeria forward <a href=\"https:\/\/soccernet.ng\/2025\/11\/ademola-lookman-net-worth-salary.html\">Ademola Lookman<\/a> has criticised the Confederation of African Football\u2019s decision to turn the <a href=\"https:\/\/soccernet.ng\/category\/afcon\">Africa Cup of Nations<\/a> into a four-year tournament, Soccernet.ng reports<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/soccernet.ng\/tag\/atalanta\">Atalanta<\/a> forward described the move as \u2018a shame&#8217; and a disappointment for players and fans across the continent.<\/p>\n<p>CAF president Patrice Motsepe announced on the eve of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations that the tournament will revert to even-numbered years and become a quadrennial event from 2028, ending more than five decades of a two-year cycle that has defined African international football.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_187429\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-187429\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/soccernet.ng\/app\/uploads\/2025\/11\/imago1048956053-750x1078.jpg\" alt=\"Soccer AFCON trophy\" width=\"750\" height=\"1078\"  ><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-187429\">Copyright: xxIMAGO<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The announcement was made in Rabat just hours before the opening match of the Morocco-hosted tournament, with Motsepe confirming that AFCON would be aligned with a wider calendar restructuring that includes the introduction of an African Nations League.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cOur focus now is on this Afcon, but in 2027, we will be going to Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda, and the Afcon after that will be in 2028,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/supersport.com\/en-NG\/football\/africa-cup-of-nations\/news\/d21c3665-329d-4e5d-a47e-3ef695c966a5\/africa-cup-of-nations-to-be-held-every-four-years-after-2028-edition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Motsepe told reporters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen, after the FIFA Club World Cup in 2029, we will have the first African Nations League\u2026 with more prize money, more resources, more competition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs part of this arrangement, the Afcon now will take place once every four years.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Get Our Sports News First \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whatsapp.com\/channel\/0029VagMHLcA89MZvw0Btc21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Join Our WhatsApp Channel Now!<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Soccer Ademola Lookman: \u2018It is a disappointment&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>But Ademola Lookman, one of the standout performers of AFCON 2025 and <a href=\"https:\/\/soccernet.ng\/tag\/nigeria\">Nigeria\u2019s<\/a> most influential player so far in the tournament, has questioned the wisdom of the decision.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_191370\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-191370\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/soccernet.ng\/app\/uploads\/2025\/12\/G9Hsu9uW4AAKbez.jpeg\" alt=\"Soccer Ademola Lookman\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\"  ><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-191370\">Ademola Lookman. Photo Credit: NFF Comms<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Speaking to <a href=\"https:\/\/gazettengr.com\/ademola-lookman-faults-caf-decision-to-move-afcon-to-four-cycle-tournament\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Peoples Gazette<\/a> in Fes the 28-year-old acknowledged that the decision was effectively irreversible, but made clear his dissatisfaction.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe decision has been made, we can\u2019t really change it,\u201d Lookman said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a shame as Africans are not able to get the tournament every two years like we are used to. Photo Credit: NFF Comms<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>AFCON has been held every two years since 1968, after its inauguration in 1957, and switched to odd-numbered years in 2013 to avoid clashes with the FIFA World Cup. The new plan would significantly reduce the number of tournaments a player can realistically attend during their career.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, Tunisia\u2019s Youssef Msakni, Ghana\u2019s Andre Ayew and Egypt\u2019s Ahmed Hassan jointly hold the record for most AFCON appearances, each featuring in eight tournaments.
