For fans of tiny cars, the recent news of the federal government looking to make kei cars<\/a> legal is a boon. But it turns out Stellantis was already ahead of the game as the company now confirms it will bring the Fiat Topolino<\/a>\u2014the small electric car’s name translates to \u201clittle mouse\u201d\u2014to the U.S. in 2026. Considering America\u2019s love affair with large trucks and SUVs, how exactly will that work for the Italian manufacturer, and how will the micro Fiat be legal for use here?<\/p>\n

We should point out the Fiat Topolino isn\u2019t really considered a car in the same way as the Smart Fortwo<\/a> and the Scion IQ<\/a> were. While all three are tiny two-seat vehicles with four wheels, the Topolino is considered a \u201cquadracycle\u201d in its home market, meaning it\u2019s more like a Moke EV<\/a> or golf cart than a motorcar. As such, it doesn\u2019t need to pass Euro New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) standards, nor does anyone need a license to drive it in many European countries and cities.<\/p>\n

What Does That Mean for the U.S. Market?<\/h2>\n

As such, the Topolino will most likely fall into a similar category here in the U.S. by way of the Low-Speed Vehicle (LSV)<\/a> exception. These are vehicles that typically don’t exceed 30 mph, with a target speed between 20\u201325 mph. Even so, some areas play fast and loose with the rules and allow LSVs to hit speeds of up to 45 mph. The Fiat Topolino doesn\u2019t top-out that high, but it does have a maximum speed of 28 mph and a maximum range just shy of 50 miles from its 5.5-kWh battery pack. If you\u2019ve ever been to a retirement village or a neighborhood that has golf carts cruising around regularly, those are the places you\u2019ll most likely see the Topolino once it goes on sale here.<\/p>\n

Another potential way to sell it would be to classify it similarly to UTVs<\/a> in states that allow those vehicles to be driven on public roads. These machines don\u2019t need to pass any stringent federal safety regulations, removing any potential issues the Fiat would face in terms of impact safety being a barrier to making it legal on streets.<\/p>\n

The Trump Kei Car Announcement<\/h2>\n

While this announcement coincides with President Trump\u2019s declaration to make kei trucks and other small vehicles legal in the U.S., Fiat says bringing the Topolino here was in the works months before that announcement. According to CNBC<\/a>, Trump ordered Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy to make those and other tiny vehicles legal across the U.S., as well as to slash fuel economy standards to make vehicles more affordable.<\/p>\n

The news about Fiat\u2019s \u201clittle mouse\u201d does tie in with Art Week Miami, along with Romero Britto, an artist and founder of The Happy Art Movement. There, he and Fiat unveiled a one-of-a-kind Topolino called the Brittolino that will eventually be displayed at Britto Palace, also located in Miami.<\/p>\n

We reached out to Fiat for more info regarding how and where it plans to sell the Topolino in the U.S., and about its projected timeline for doing so. The company would only confirm the car is headed our way, with \u201cmore to share in coming months.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n
