He grew up in Newham. Before the end of that year, <a href=\"https:\/\/soccernet.ng\/2022\/08\/i-almost-quit-football-at-15-nigerias-most-expensive-defender.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he joined Leicester City&#8217;s academy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI remember being 15 and going into my final year, and I told myself that if I didn\u2019t get a professional club, I would quit football. It was that simple,\u201d the former Rangers defender said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would just stop pursuing it seriously and only play for fun. Thank God I eventually got a club, because I honestly don\u2019t know where I would be otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would have played casually with my friends, but I wouldn\u2019t have chased a career in it anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLooking back, that moment was good for me. It felt like a make-or-break point, so I had to give everything I had. [Photo Credit\/ Imago].<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>AFCON Gratitude and friendship with Alex Iwobi<\/h3>\n<p>Ahead of Nigeria&#8217;s AFCON Group C opener against Tanzania, Alex Iwobi was relishing the moment, stating how a stage like the Cup of Nations is where every African player dreams of playing.<\/p>\n<p>Bassey, in the moment, was thankful for how his life turned around from being a kid who came close to quitting professional football to someone who&#8217;s representing Nigeria in a second major tournament.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cYou know, many people dream of being here, I actually thank God\u201d, Iwobi said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thank God, bro,\u201d Bassey responded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#8217;t understand what God has done in my life.
