At least 23 people have died after a blaze<\/a> tore through a popular nightclub.<\/p>\n

The fire<\/a> is believed to have started after a cylinder explosion at club Birch by Romeo Lane in Arpora, India\u2019s<\/a> North Goa, about midnight on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Goa\u2019s chief minister, Pramod Sawant, confirmed the death toll in a statement on X.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday is a very painful day for all of us in Goa. A major fire incident at Arpora has taken the lives of 23 people,\u201d he wrote on Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am deeply grieved and offer my heartfelt condolences to all the bereaved families in this hour of unimaginable loss.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sawant said he had visited the scene and that an inquiry into the cause of the fire is now underway.<\/p>\n

He told journalists \u201cthree to four tourists\u201d were among the dead.<\/p>\n

Three people are believed to have died from burn injuries, while the others succumbed to suffocation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThose found responsible will face most stringent action under the law \u2014any negligence will be dealt with firmly,\u201d Sawant said.<\/p>\n
