The biggest night in Hollywood will soon be streamed right next to Mr. Beast.\u00a0<\/p>\n

You heard\u00a0right: the Oscars, the Academy Awards, the annual ceremony, the\u00a0red carpet, the most glamourous faces in Hollywood gathering to give themselves golden statuettes, is going\u00a0to YouTube\u2014starting in 2029.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences delivered the bombshell news on Wednesday, and the Academy\u2019s decision will no doubt be greeted by howls of outrage and indignation from the embattled movie industry.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Academy Awards will begin airing\u2014ahem, streaming<\/em>\u2014on YouTube starting in 2029<\/a>, with the four-year deal running through 2033. The\u00a0Oscars broadcast will stream for free on YouTube, along with the Governors Awards, the announcement of Oscar nominations,\u00a0and more.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Oscars has aired on network TV\u2014bouncing back and forth between NBC and ABC\u2014for more than 70 years, and while the ratings for the awards show have been\u00a0in steep decline over the past decade or so,\u00a0the broadcast is still viewed as\u00a0quite the\u00a0prestigious\u00a0event.\u00a0<\/p>\n

So\u00a0moving the Academy Awards to streaming\u2014to\u00a0YouTube!\u2014<\/em>where the biggest night\u00a0in Hollywood will sit alongside\u00a0vertical\u00a0shorts and\u00a0the latest episode of Hot Ones<\/em>\u2026 well, talk about a slap in the face.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The news also comes a little more than a week after Netflix announced it had entered into an agreement with Warner Brothers<\/a> to\u00a0purchase\u00a0the storied movie\u00a0and TV\u00a0studio,\u00a0the home of such cinema classics as Casablanca,\u00a0the Wizard of Oz, All the President\u2019s Men, Goodfellas, <\/em>the Harry Potter <\/em>movies,\u00a0Game of Thrones<\/em>, and of course, the Police Academy<\/em> saga.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The one-two punch of Warners being gobbled up by Netflix (assuming\u00a0federal regulators approve the deal, which is still a big \u201cif\u201d at this point) and the Oscars going to streaming will surely be seen as\u00a0twin\u00a0death knells\u00a0for the motion picture industry, even if the latter development is more symbolic than the former.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Of course, the truth is that the Oscars had\u00a0made the move to YouTube long ago, in the form of viral videos. How many of us watched\u00a0\u201cThe Slap\u201d<\/a> on the actual broadcast? Not me. Nope, I saw it on YouTube, and same goes for\u00a0the Ellen\u00a0DeGeneres\u00a0selfie, Jennifer Lawrence tripping on the steps on her way to the podium, and so on.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In retrospect, the Academy Awards moving to YouTube\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0that shocking after all. Heck,\u00a0maybe it\u2019s\u00a0simply fitting.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
