{"id":878321,"date":"2025-12-17T23:20:39","date_gmt":"2025-12-18T05:20:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2025\/12\/17\/beloved-youth-sports-referee-dies-on-court-during-basketball-game-he-truly-died-doing-what-he-loved\/"},"modified":"2025-12-17T23:20:39","modified_gmt":"2025-12-18T05:20:39","slug":"beloved-youth-sports-referee-dies-on-court-during-basketball-game-he-truly-died-doing-what-he-loved","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2025\/12\/17\/beloved-youth-sports-referee-dies-on-court-during-basketball-game-he-truly-died-doing-what-he-loved\/","title":{"rendered":"Beloved Youth Sports Referee Dies on Court During Basketball Game: \u2018He Truly Died Doing What He Loved\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Basketball <\/p>\n<div>\n<h3>NEED TO KNOW<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>A beloved youth sports referee has died after collapsing during a high school basketball game on Friday night<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>The Central Indiana youth sports community mourned Jeff Tamarri&#8217;s death this week<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Tamarri, known as &#8220;Jeff the Ref&#8221; to many Indiana sports families, officiated youth sporting events for more than 30 years<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A beloved youth sports referee who worked games across Central Indiana for more than three decades has died after collapsing on the court during a girls&#8217; high school basketball game.<\/p>\n<p>Jeff Tamarri, who was known among families as \u201cJeff the Ref,\u201d was 63 years old.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Tamarri collapsed during a game at Monrovia High School on Friday, Dec. 12, according to NBC affiliate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wthr.com\/article\/news\/local\/jeff-tamarri-referee-remembered-died-monrovia-high-school-basketball-game\/531-94cbef04-54d1-4110-b187-b069a99abacf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:WTHR;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">WTHR<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indystar.com\/story\/sports\/high-school\/2025\/12\/15\/family-of-basketball-referee-jeff-tamarri-touched-by-community-support-died-monrovia\/87769047007\/?gnt-cfr=1&#038;gca-cat=p&#038;gca-uir=false&#038;gca-epti=z11----p119950c119950u113915d00----v11xx15o11----&#038;gca-ft=51&#038;gca-ds=sophi\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:IndyStar;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\"><em>IndyStar<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>WTHR reported that Tamarri\u2019s collapse prompted fans to clear the gym so bystanders with medical backgrounds could work on saving him until first responders arrived.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have no doubt in my mind that they did all they could,\u201d fellow youth sports referee Kevin Brown told WTHR. \u201cUnfortunately, I just don\u2019t think there was much to be done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brown mourned Tamarri as a sports referee who enjoyed his job and \u201cwas always out there for the right reasons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe truly died doing what I know he loved,\u201d Brown said.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe had a calming presence, and I always said officials need to lower the temperature in the room,\u201d Brown told WTHR. \u201cSome people are really gifted at it.
