{"id":877665,"date":"2025-12-16T22:15:55","date_gmt":"2025-12-17T04:15:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2025\/12\/16\/texas-sues-tv-makers-for-taking-screenshots-of-what-people-watch\/"},"modified":"2025-12-16T22:15:55","modified_gmt":"2025-12-17T04:15:55","slug":"texas-sues-tv-makers-for-taking-screenshots-of-what-people-watch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2025\/12\/16\/texas-sues-tv-makers-for-taking-screenshots-of-what-people-watch\/","title":{"rendered":"Texas sues TV makers for taking screenshots of what people watch"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"TV remote\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bleepstatic.com\/content\/hl-images\/2025\/12\/16\/TV_remote.jpg\" width=\"1600\"><\/p>\n<p>The Texas Attorney General sued five major television manufacturers, accusing them of illegally collecting their users&#8217; data by secretly recording what they watch using Automated Content Recognition (ACR) technology.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuits target <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texasattorneygeneral.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/press\/Sony%20TV%20Petition%20Filed.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Sony<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texasattorneygeneral.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/press\/Samsung%20TV%20Petition%20Filed.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Samsung<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texasattorneygeneral.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/press\/LG%20TV%20Petition%20Filed.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">LG<\/a>, and China-based companies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texasattorneygeneral.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/press\/Hisense%20TV%20Petition%20Filed.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Hisense<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texasattorneygeneral.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/press\/TCL%20TV%20Petition%20Filed.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TCL<\/a> Technology Group Corporation. Attorney General Ken Paxton&#8217;s office also highlighted &#8220;serious concerns&#8221; about the two Chinese companies being required to follow China&#8217;s National Security Law, which could give the Chinese government access to U.S. consumers&#8217; data.<\/p>\n<p>According to complaints filed this Monday in Texas state courts, the TV makers can allegedly use ACR technology to capture screenshots of television displays every 500 milliseconds, monitor the users&#8217; viewing activity in real time, and send this information back to the companies&#8217; servers without the users&#8217; knowledge or consent.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bleepingcomputer.com\/mgo\/72\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bleepstatic.com\/content\/webinar-images\/Action1-970x250-watch-now.jpg\" alt=\"Wiz\"><\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>Paxton&#8217;s office described ACR technology as &#8220;an uninvited, invisible digital invader&#8221; designed to unlawfully collect personal data from smart televisions, alleging that the harvested information then gets sold to the highest bidder for ad targeting.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Companies, especially those connected to the Chinese Communist Party, have no business illegally recording Americans&#8217; devices inside their own homes,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texasattorneygeneral.gov\/news\/releases\/attorney-general-paxton-sues-five-major-tv-companies-including-some-ties-ccp-spying-texans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Paxton said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This conduct is invasive, deceptive, and unlawful.
