Lawrence Moten, Syracuse University\u2019s all-time leading scorer in men\u2019s basketball, passed away this week at 53. Known for rolling his socks all the way up to his calves as an Orangeman, you probably wouldn\u2019t find anyone else as humble as Moten was. He wrote on Instagram, <em>\u201cOn this special edition of The Etan and Devo Show, we did a tribute episode to Lawrence Moten\u2026 We talked about how amazing of a player he was at Syracuse, how gifted of a scorer he was, one of the best ever in the Big East, but more importantly, we talked about Lawrence Moten the person. His love for his daughters, his positive spirit, his laid back demeanor, how much he appreciated the love he got from the Syracuse community.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-athlete=\"false\">Lovingly remembered as <em>Poetry in Moten,<\/em> every fan from that era has, and will continue to have a great deal of respect for the hoopster.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p data-article=\"true\">ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p>Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p data-athlete=\"false\"><em>\u201cWe\u2019re talking one time on the train going up there, and we just talking. We see different people coming by, and, you know, everybody say \u201dCuse in the house\u2019. They still say that yell out loud at the train station, and it\u2019s just a lot of \u2018Cuse love, and he always really appreciated it, like it would make him light up. Like he would just have that big smile and just say, \u2018Yeah, love going back.\u2019 So, I mean he loved \u2018Cuse man, and \u2018Cuse loved him, so he\u2019s definitely gonna be missed. Yeah. Yeah, man,\u201d<\/em> Etan Thomas said on the tribute episode of his podcast.<\/p>\n<p data-athlete=\"false\">Lawrence Moten was a smooth and efficient scorer. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.essentiallysports.com\/tag\/jim-boeheim\/?utm_medium=website&#038;utm_source=website_internal&#038;utm_campaign=web_link_2\" target=\"_self\">Jim Boeheim<\/a>, his coach during those unforgettable four Syracuse seasons, described him as an overlooked great in college basketball, saying, \u201c<em>Lawrence\u2019s passing is such a sudden thing\u2026 He was one of the most underrated college basketball players of all time.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<p data-article=\"true\">ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p>Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<blockquote data-instgrm-captioned data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DPZMsu7EeB3\/?utm_source=ig_embed&#038;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\">\n<div>\n<p>\nView this post on Instagram\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p data-athlete=\"false\">Adrian Autrey, former teammate and current Syracuse head coach, shared his own perspective. \u201c<em>For me, Lawrence was not only a teammate but a friend<\/em>. <em>I can\u2019t think of anybody that was more positive or who loved Syracuse more than he did,<\/em>\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p data-athlete=\"false\">Long after his playing days, Lawrence Moten was known and respected for returning to the program to mentor young players and attend games, always a positive presence on the courtside. He continued to lace up his sneakers for charity games to benefit underserved communities. That\u2019s what makes this loss hit so hard. Syracuse didn\u2019t just lose a legend, but a crucial part of its heartbeat.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/preferences\/source?q=essentiallysports.com\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-athlete=\"false\">Athletic Director John Wildhack put it plainly: \u201c<em>Lawrence Moten was a Syracuse icon. He was a fixture around the program long after his playing career.<\/em>\u201d Thomas ended his post on a similar note: \u201c<em>Rest In Peace Poetry \ud83d\ude4f\ud83c\udffe\ud83c\udf4a,<\/em>\u201d with many fans echoing the sentiment.<\/p>\n<p data-athlete=\"false\">When Lawrence Moten first stepped onto the court for Syracuse in 1991, few could\u2019ve predicted how he would change the program\u2019s future. Fast forward to his exit four years later, he left the school as not just its all-time leading scorer, but the entire Big East\u2019s, a record that stood for decades! Twenty-five years later, when Marquette\u2019s Markus Howard broke the record in 2020, Moten was in attendance to take part in the ceremony to mark the occasion.<\/p>\n<p data-athlete=\"false\">Moten remains the only player in Big East history to score over 500 points in four consecutive seasons. He scored in double figures in 118 of 121 games. He finished his career with 2,334 career points, earning three First-Team All-Big East honors. His scoring touch and consistency were the centerpiece of Syracuse\u2019s success in the early\u00a0<span>1990s, leading the team to multiple deep\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.essentiallysports.com\/category\/basketball-2\/college-basketball\/?utm_medium=website&#038;utm_source=website_internal&#038;utm_campaign=web_link_2\" target=\"_self\">NCAA<\/a> tournament runs and cementing his name among<\/span> the greatest Orangemen of all time.<\/p>\n<p><img title=\"basketball\" id=\"img-tag-node-img-loader-0\" src=\"https:\/\/image-cdn.essentiallysports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/lawrence-moten.webp?width=600\" fetchpriority=\"high\" loading=\"eager\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"basketball article-image\"><\/p>\n<p data-athlete=\"false\">After his time in college, he continued his hoops career with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.essentiallysports.com\/category\/nba\/memphis-grizzlies\/?utm_medium=website&#038;utm_source=website_internal&#038;utm_campaign=web_link_2\" target=\"_self\">Vancouver Grizzlies<\/a> in the NBA, later going overseas.
