Brian Quintenz, U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s pick to lead the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), shared messages between him and Gemini co-founder Tyler Winklevoss, amid his stalled confirmation.<\/p>\n

Brian Quintenz Takes to X Over \u2018Paused\u2019 CFTC Nomination<\/span><\/h2>\n

According to a September 10 X post on Quintenz\u2019s official account, the a16z crypto policy head claims that Winklevoss asked Trump to have Quintenz\u2019s nomination \u201cpaused\u201d following their message exchange.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve never been inclined to release private messages. But in light of my support for the President and belief that he might have been misled, I\u2019ve posted here the messages that include the questions Tyler Winklevoss asked me pertaining to their prior litigation with the CFTC. <\/p>\n

The messages from late July purportedly detail Winklevoss\u2019s concerns over what he calls \u201c7 years of lawfare trophy hunting\u201d and largely focus on Gemini\u2019s June 2025 complaint with the CFTC<\/a> regarding investigative misconduct.<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe these texts make it clear what they were after from me, and what I refused to promise,\u201d Quintenz said. \u201cIt\u2019s my understanding that after this exchange they contacted the President and asked that my confirmation be paused for reasons other than what is reflected in these texts.\u201d<\/p>\n

The duo eventually agreed to chat at a later date, though it\u2019s unclear whether that conversation ever happened.<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe transparency and integrity are paramount,\u201d he added. \u201cProtecting the President and his agenda are more important than any job.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gemini Pays Up in CFTC Case<\/span><\/h2>\n

The CFTC formally filed a complaint against Gemini in 2022 for \u201cmaking false or misleading statements of material facts or omitting to state material facts to the CFTC\u201d over the self-certification of a bitcoin futures product.<\/p>\n

As a result, the digital asset platform<\/a> was ordered to pay a civil monetary penalty of $5 million.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaking false or misleading statements to the CFTC in connection with a derivatives product certification undermines the CFTC\u2019s efforts to ensure all futures products trading on CFTC-regulated markets comply with the CEA and CFTC regulations and, among other things, are not readily susceptible to manipulation,\u201d former Director of Enforcement Ian McGinley said in a statement at the time.<\/p>\n

However, it is still unclear whether Quintenz\u2019s confirmation process will proceed.<\/p>\n
