The 81-year-old executive chairman has benefitted from Oracle\u2019s growing cloud-infrastructure business; most notably this week, as the company announced it won several billion-dollar contracts in its most recent quarter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The 81-year-old cofounder of software giant Oracle beat out Elon Musk to claim the title of world\u2019s richest person for the first time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Ellison, who cofounded Oracle in the \u201870s and is still its chief technology officer and executive chairman, saw his net worth skyrocket over the past day to $393 billion, jumping ahead of Musk\u2019s $385 billion, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/billionaires\/?sref=2jPYL79S\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/billionaires\/?sref=2jPYL79S\"><em>Bloomberg Billionaire\u2019s Index<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ellison\u2019s wealth rose by $101 billion overnight after Oracle\u2019s stock exploded by double digits after close Tuesday. On Wednesday, Oracle\u2019s shares continued their upward trajectory, up more than 40% in morning trading. The company\u2019s stock price has, as of Wednesday, doubled year-to-date. Ellison owns more than 40% of Oracle, and much of his wealth is tied to the company, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-07-16\/who-is-larry-ellison-and-how-did-he-amass-a-251-billion-fortune?sref=2jPYL79S\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-07-16\/who-is-larry-ellison-and-how-did-he-amass-a-251-billion-fortune?sref=2jPYL79S\"><em>Bloomberg<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Oracle has benefitted from large infrastructure investments in its role as a cloud provider and its services have been highly sought after by data-hoarding AI companies since the release of ChatGPT set off an arms race for advanced large language models (LLMs) in 2022.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The company said in its most recent quarter it won several contracts expected to yield $455 billion in revenue, a huge jump from the year prior, the<em> <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/business\/earnings\/oracle-stock-orcl-ai-deals-047216cd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/business\/earnings\/oracle-stock-orcl-ai-deals-047216cd\"><em>Wall Street Journal<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>reported. Before the end of the year, several more multibillion-dollar customers are expected to sign up with the company as well, said its CEO Safra Catz.<\/p>\n<p>In recent months, Oracle\u2019s recent stock gains lifted Ellison above <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/facebook\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/facebook\/\">Meta<\/a> CEO and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, who was previously the second-richest person behind Musk, before ultimately beating out Musk. Musk claimed the title of world\u2019s richest for the first time in 2021 before being toppled by <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/amazon-com\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/amazon-com\/\">Amazon<\/a> executive chairman Jeff Bezos and LVMH Bernard Arnault. Musk reclaimed the title in 2024 and held onto it for about 300 days, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-09-10\/oracle-co-founder-larry-ellison-closes-in-on-elon-musk-as-world-s-richest-man?sref=2jPYL79S\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-09-10\/oracle-co-founder-larry-ellison-closes-in-on-elon-musk-as-world-s-richest-man?sref=2jPYL79S\"><em>Bloomberg<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While Oracle\u2019s stock is on the rise, Tesla\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/10\/15\/elon-musk-net-worth-tesla-cybercab-event\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/10\/15\/elon-musk-net-worth-tesla-cybercab-event\/\">shares are falling<\/a>. The electric-car maker\u2019s stock is down 13% year-to-date and its market share in the U.S. has dropped to its lowest point since 2017, <em>Reuters<\/em> reported citing data from research firm Cox Automotive.<\/p>\n<p>But there may be hope for Musk, yet.
