It was truly a week unlike any other.<\/p>\n<p><em>As always: The Power Rankings are voted on by, give or take, 15 people associated with MLSsoccer.com. The author does get a little rush out of moving your team down a few spots, though.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>In their biggest match of the season, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/clubs\/philadelphia-union\/\">Union<\/a> went on the road to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/clubs\/fc-cincinnati\/\">FC Cincinnati<\/a> and survived a 60th-minute red card to earn a potentially season-making 1-0 win. They\u2019re five points clear of Cincy at the top of the East now and one point ahead of San Diego in the Supporters\u2019 Shield standings.<\/p>\n<p>If they get this over the finish line, it will likely be thanks to their league-best defense. The Union are the only team in MLS who haven\u2019t allowed 30+ goals this season. The win over Cincy marked their 11th clean sheet of the season.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>San Diego spoiled the party for LAFC on Son Heung-Min\u2019s BMO Stadium debut thanks to this dagger from Anders Dreyer (via an involuntary-noise-inducing pass from Jeppe Tverskov).<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<blockquote><p>\u2014 Major League Soccer (@MLS) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MLS\/status\/1962370354950623559?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 1, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>That\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/players\/anders-dreyer\/\">Dreyer<\/a>\u2019s 14th goal of the season and 32nd goal contribution. He\u2019s your leader in the clubhouse for Landon Donovan MLS MVP. And San Diego are your leader in the West. They\u2019ve earned seven straight wins on the road and have put five points between themselves and second-place <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/clubs\/minnesota-united-fc\/\">Minnesota United<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>By the way, they\u2019re five for five against in-state competition now.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Academy products <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/players\/obed-vargas\/\">Obed Vargas<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/players\/paul-rothrock\/\">Paul Rothrock<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/players\/reed-baker-whiting-x4772\/\">Reed Baker-Whiting<\/a> all started. Former Tacoma Defiance signing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/players\/osaze-de-rosario\/\">Osaze De Rosario<\/a> scored the opener, and fellow former Defiance player <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/players\/georgi-minoungou\/\">Georgi Minoungou<\/a> earned a late penalty as Seattle\u2019s talent development pipeline absolutely whomped <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/players\/lionel-messi\/\">Lionel Messi<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/clubs\/inter-miami-cf\/\">Inter Miami<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/competitions\/leagues-cup\/2025\/matches\/seavsmia-08-31-2025\/\">3-0<\/a>, in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/competitions\/leagues-cup\">Leagues Cup<\/a> final. Nearly 70,000 showed up to watch a side missing two DPs and a litany of other contributors outpace the league\u2019s most talked-about side.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s Seattle\u2019s ninth major trophy since joining MLS in 2009 and it\u2019s a tremendous credit to the club and the team\u2019s depth. They\u2019ve played the kids, and the kids have rewarded them with their first trophy of the season. Considering how the Sounders have played as of late and, ya know, the fact they\u2019re the Sounders, would you really be surprised if they earned a second trophy at the end of the season?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Previous: Bye | Next: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/competitions\/mls-regular-season\/2025\/matches\/seavsla-09-13-2025\/\">9\/13 vs. LA<\/a><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The second-longest winning streak in MLS history belongs to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/clubs\/charlotte-fc\/\">Charlotte<\/a> after a 2-1 victory over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/clubs\/new-england-revolution\/\">New England<\/a> made it eight straight. They\u2019re one win away from tying 2018 Seattle for the record. If they tie it, they\u2019ll do it in a huge six-pointer against Miami. There\u2019s still work to do, but a top-four finish is well within reach now.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/players\/idan-toklomati\/\">Idan Toklomati<\/a> scored the winner in this one, by the way. Oluwaseyi will certainly be missed, though. They could have used an extra boost in attack in their 1-1 draw with Portland.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>At what point should the narrative turn towards an open and honest discussion about whether the Messi era has come up short in Miami? Plenty of teams would be ecstatic about a Leagues Cup and Supporters\u2019 Shield win over two years, but expectations are and should be different when you have the best player on the planet. Besides that initial Leagues Cup run on Messi\u2019s arrival, they\u2019ve yet to truly show up in big moments. That was once again the case in Sunday&#8217;s Leagues Cup final loss against Seattle.<\/p>\n<p>They still have a shot at a second straight Supporters\u2019 Shield, but it\u2019s going to be an uphill battle from here. They\u2019re back to squeeze in their final seven games starting on Sept. 13. The warning signs have been flashing for Cincy all year. Now, after a 1-0 loss to Philly made it four scoreless games in their last five MLS matches and three straight home losses, the cracks are starting to show.<\/p>\n<p>Their end-of-year goal is rapidly changing from \u201cWin the Shield\u201d to \u201cHold onto a home playoff spot.\u201d Six points separate Cincy and seventh-place <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/clubs\/columbus-crew\/\">Columbus<\/a> and the Crew have a game in hand.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/clubs\/orlando-city-sc\/\">Orlando<\/a> were playing some of the best ball in the league before a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/competitions\/mls-regular-season\/2025\/matches\/nshvsorl-08-23-2025\/\">5-1 loss<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/clubs\/nashville-sc\/\">Nashville<\/a> on Aug. 23. They rotated that night to prepare for their two upcoming Leagues Cup matches, then proceeded to fall late against Inter Miami and drop the Third-Place match to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/clubs\/la-galaxy\/\">LA Galaxy<\/a>, which would have secured a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/competitions\/concacaf-champions-league\">Concacaf Champions Cup<\/a> spot.<\/p>\n<p>They get a much-needed week off to regroup before a perilous six-game run to the finish line.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Previous: Bye | Next: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/competitions\/mls-regular-season\/2025\/matches\/dcvsorl-09-13-2025\/\">9\/13 at DC<\/a><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Nashville desperately needed this international break. A 1-0 loss to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/clubs\/atlanta-united\/\">Atlanta<\/a> made it four losses in five. They get a week off to reset before a make-or-break three-game stretch that features road trips to Cincy and Orlando with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/competitions\/u-s-open-cup\">US Open Cup<\/a> semifinal against Philadelphia sandwiched in between.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/players\/son-heung-min\/\">Son Heung-Min<\/a> had his home debut ruined by a special San Diego side. They weren\u2019t overrun at all though in a 2-1 loss. The final xG tally came in at 2.7 to 0.7 in favor of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/clubs\/los-angeles-football-club\/\">LAFC<\/a>. Tough break.<\/p>\n<p>The same can be said about losing midfielder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/players\/igor-jesus\/\">Igor Jesus<\/a> for the season after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/news\/lafc-midfielder-igor-jesus-suffers-season-ending-knee-injury\">he tore his ACL<\/a>. LAFC have had better weeks.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>New DP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/players\/wessam-abou-ali\/\">Wessam Abou Ali<\/a>\u2019s first start ended in a scoreless road draw against the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/clubs\/new-york-red-bulls\/\">New York Red Bulls<\/a>. The Crew only have one MLS win since July 12 and have slipped to seventh place in the East. It\u2019s unfamiliar territory for Wilfried Nancy and company.<\/p>\n<p>That said, the Crew are only four points out of a home playoff spot and will have every chance to make a push for a top-four place with six games remaining.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Ack.<\/p>\n<p>A 2-1 loss to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/clubs\/d-c-united\/\">D.C. United<\/a> side playing for absolutely nothing when you\u2019re jostling for critical playoff positioning is\u2026it\u2019s really not great. It\u2019s especially rough when it\u2019s by far the easiest match remaining on your schedule. When <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/clubs\/new-york-city-football-club\/\">NYCFC<\/a> returns after the break, they\u2019ll go Chicago \u2192 Columbus \u2192 Charlotte \u2192 Miami \u2192 Red Bulls \u2192 Philly \u2192 Seattle to close the year.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>They couldn\u2019t find a breakthrough in a 0-0 home draw against Columbus. Heading into the homestretch, it\u2019s advantage <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/clubs\/chicago-fire-fc\/\">Chicago<\/a> in the race for the final playoff spot in the East. The Fire are one point behind with two games in hand.<\/p>\n<p>Following up an MLS Cup appearance by scrapping and clawing to maintain your playoff streak is far below where expectations were entering the season.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>A 1-1 draw with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/clubs\/minnesota-united-fc\/\">Minnesota<\/a> is a solid result but it seems like a top-four finish isn\u2019t in the cards for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/clubs\/portland-timbers\/\">Portland<\/a> this year. The rest of the regular season is about integrating new signings while avoiding a slip back into a Wild Card spot.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Chicago took a needed week off after getting thumped by Philly a couple of weeks ago. They\u2019ll enter their matchup with New England this weekend rested and with reason for optimism. New York\u2019s draw with Columbus means the Fire are entering their final seven games with two games in hand and one point separating them and the ninth-place Red Bulls.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Previous: Bye | Next: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/competitions\/mls-regular-season\/2025\/matches\/chivsne-09-06-2025\/\">9\/6 vs. NE<\/a><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>For all the grief <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/clubs\/austin-fc\/\">Austin FC<\/a> got for their attacking performances at the start of the season, they\u2019ve certainly turned a corner now. Their 3-1 win over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/clubs\/san-jose-earthquakes\/\">San Jose<\/a> marked the fifth time in their last six games that they\u2019ve scored multiple goals.<\/p>\n<p>It feels like they&#8217;re within touching distance of locking up a playoff spot after last weekend&#8217;s win. They\u2019re as close to fourth-place Seattle (six points) as they are to 10th-place <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/clubs\/houston-dynamo-fc\/\">Houston<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Same as it ever was for the Quakes. Defensive issues doomed them in a 3-1 loss to Austin. Now they have to hold onto the final playoff spot in the West despite their final five games featuring matchups with LAFC, San Diego, Vancouver and Austin again.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Paxten Aaronson made his full debut as a DP (and looked lively) but that didn\u2019t stop Colorado\u2019s defense from allowing three goals in the final 20 minutes to Sporting KC in a difficult 4-2 loss.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re still above the line\u2014four points ahead of 10th-place Houston\u2014but they haven\u2019t inspired much confidence over the last two weeks with back-to-back losses to the 13th and 15th place teams in the West.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>They desperately needed to stop the bleeding after going six matches without a win. They finally found three points again with their 3-2 win over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/clubs\/st-louis-city-sc\/\">St. Louis<\/a> on Saturday. They\u2019re still in 10th place, with winnable games against LA and Colorado up next.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>No match for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/clubs\/real-salt-lake\/\">Real Salt Lake<\/a> last week or this week. They\u2019ll be back on Sept. 13 against SKC. They probably deserved at least a point for their trouble. Their third-place finish in Leagues Cup doesn\u2019t totally make up for everything else this year, but they\u2019ll get to head into next year with a healthy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/players\/ricard-puig-marti\/\">Riqui Puig<\/a> and an immediate chance at a major trophy. They haven\u2019t won in their last four games. But they haven\u2019t lost either.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>New DP midfielder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/players\/ivan-jaime\/\">Iv\u00e1n Jaime<\/a> debuted in the 1-1 draw with Toronto and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/players\/dante-sealy\/\">Dante Sealy<\/a> scored his fourth goal in five matches.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>D.C. is doing an admirable job of dragging everyone else down with them. The East\u2019s last-place team followed up a 1-1 draw against Inter Miami with a 2-1 win over NYCFC, which could cause real issues for the Pigeons in the standings.<\/p>\n<p>Their next four matches are against Orlando, Miami again, Philadelphia, and Charlotte. Those sides should beware of a team going out swinging.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>A 3-2 loss to Houston has them just two points ahead of last-place LA.
