Russian President Vladimir Putin met Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing on Tuesday (September 2), praising relations between the two countries as being at an \u201cunprecedented level.\u201d The talks came on the eve of a massive military parade marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur close communication reflects the strategic nature of Russian-Chinese ties, which are currently at an unprecedented level,\u201d Putin<\/a> said. He added, \u201cWe were always together then, and we remain together now.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n

Xi praises resilience of partnership<\/h2>\n

Xi<\/a> responded to Putin<\/a> that China-Russia relations have \u201cwithstood the test of international changes.\u201d He pledged Beijing\u2019s readiness to deepen cooperation with Moscow to \u201cpromote the construction of a more just and reasonable global governance system.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The two leaders last met in May when Xi traveled to Moscow for Russia\u2019s Victory Day celebrations. Their frequent exchanges underscore the strength of a \u201cno limits partnership\u201d declared in February 2022, shortly before Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n

SCO Summit and western criticism<\/h2>\n

Putin<\/a> also joined Xi at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin <\/a>on Monday. The forum brought together China\u2019s closest allies at a time of heightened global tensions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

On Monday, Xi criticised \u201cbullying behaviour\u201d from unnamed countries<\/a> \u2014 a thinly veiled reference to the United States \u2014 while Putin defended Russia\u2019s offensive in Ukraine, blaming the West for provoking the conflict.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

North Korea joins<\/h2>\n

The parade will also serve as a rare diplomatic stage for North Korean leader Kim Jong Un<\/a>, who is expected to meet both Putin and Xi during his first visit to China since 2019.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Kim is likely to attend a gala performance and hold side talks.<\/p>\n

Seoul\u2019s spy agency also reported that around 2,000 North Korean troops have been killed while fighting alongside Russian forces in Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Beijing\u2019s balancing act<\/h2>\n

While Beijing has never condemned Russia\u2019s invasion nor called for a withdrawal, it maintains that it is a neutral actor. Western allies remain concerned that Beijing has quietly supported Moscow, while Pyongyang has openly declared its backing for Russia.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
