While Little Rock is nearly three hours southeast from the University of Arkansas itself, War Memorial Stadium was built at a time when Razorback Stadium in Fayetteville lagged significantly behind in regard to capacity, amenities and the overall gameday experience. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"ac_105140937\">\n<p><iframe id=\"ytplayer_4886913\" type=\"text\/html\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3M5LSApjeXk?showinfo=0\" frameborder=\"0\" webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"ac_105140938\">\n<p>In a state with no professional sports franchises and a lack of major collegiate athletic programs aside from the Razorbacks, the U of A\u2019s decision to play games in Little Rock allowed a dedicated fan base from around the state to make a relatively easier drive \u2014 at least, in the days before I-49 was constructed \u2014 to see the Hogs play.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"ac_105140939\">\n<p><iframe id=\"ytplayer_4886914\" type=\"text\/html\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9Ldu1b6AntA?showinfo=0\" frameborder=\"0\" webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"ac_105140940\">\n<p><span>As the years wore on, however, Razorback Stadium in Fayetteville began to outshine War Memorial. When Arkansas left the ailing Southwest Conference for the Southeastern Conference in the early 1990s, Razorback Stadium only continued its rapid expansion. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Today, Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium is palatial in comparison to War Memorial. Arkansas\u2019 home away from home hasn\u2019t aged gracefully, and while the Razorbacks have continued to play at least one game in Little Rock every year \u2014 save for 2020 and 2022 \u2014 myriad <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wholehogsports.com\/news\/2025\/sep\/01\/war-memorial-stadium-prepares-to-host-largest-crowd-in-years-for-arkansas-football-vs-arkansas-state\/\" target=\"_blank\">problems<\/a>, such as poor logistics for ticketing and concession processes in 2023 and a lack of plumbing and air conditioning in 2024, have marred War Memorial\u2019s once-proud image. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>2025 is the final year of the University of Arkansas\u2019 contract to play at War Memorial Stadium. It\u2019s not the first time that WMS\u2019s future has been uncertain, but this time, the writing seems to be on the wall that Razorback football may never return to Little Rock. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But if Saturday\u2019s game is the final game Arkansas plays at War Memorial Stadium, a first-of-its-kind, in-state matchup with the Arkansas State Red Wolves is a perfect send-off.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>Arkansas and Arkansas State have never met on the gridiron, as Arkansas largely avoided playing other in-state schools over the decades. Before a 2021 contest with UA-Pine Bluff at War Memorial, Arkansas hadn\u2019t played against an in-state foe since a 1944 matchup with UA-Monticello.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Razorbacks will welcome former Tennessee head coach Butch Jones and the Red Wolves to Little Rock for a game that will captivate all four corners of the state.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"ac_105140881\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<center><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p>Is there any advantage to Arkansas playing at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock? <\/p>\n<p>Sam Pittman sheds light on that as well as if any future games will be played down there. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/3PZZhvRufd\">pic.twitter.com\/3PZZhvRufd<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u2014 John Nabors (@JohnNaborsShow) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JohnNaborsShow\/status\/1962564745627676682?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 1, 2025<\/a>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/center>\n\t<\/div>\n<div id=\"ac_105140882\">\n<blockquote>\n<p><span>\u201cI\u2019m excited about it,\u201d Arkansas head coach Sam Pittman said in a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/UcG8kbFxW-k?si=n2ly9Ep1rLCF3ABy\" target=\"_blank\"><span>news conference\u00a0<\/span><\/a><span>on Monday. \u201cI\u2019m excited to get this game (with) it being the first time we\u2019ve ever played. I\u2019m glad I\u2019m going to be part of the history of that.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Pittman, who was a Razorback fan growing up in Eastern Oklahoma and an offensive line coach at UA before becoming Arkansas&#8217; head coach, knows what War Memorial Stadium means to both the Razorbacks and the state of Arkansas as a whole.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span>\u201cHopefully, this one is packed and it\u2019s as loud as Peyton Manning says it is over there,\u201d Pittman said. \u201cI still think (the) history of the power of the Hogs in our state, a bunch of it is because we would take the team over to Little Rock.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The luster of War Memorial Stadium has certainly faded over the years, but on Saturday, the state of Arkansas will come together for one more classic on Markham.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"http:\/\/www.yardbarker.com\/authors\/samuel_stubbs\/1318\">Samuel Stubbs<\/a><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Hailing from the same neck of the woods as NASCAR Hall of Famer Mark Martin, Samuel has been covering NASCAR for Yardbarker since February 2024.
