{"id":869295,"date":"2025-08-31T01:12:17","date_gmt":"2025-08-31T06:12:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2025\/08\/31\/rivers-lg-polls-residents-defy-no-movement-order-cite-economic-hardship\/"},"modified":"2025-08-31T01:12:17","modified_gmt":"2025-08-31T06:12:17","slug":"rivers-lg-polls-residents-defy-no-movement-order-cite-economic-hardship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2025\/08\/31\/rivers-lg-polls-residents-defy-no-movement-order-cite-economic-hardship\/","title":{"rendered":"Rivers LG polls: Residents defy no-movement order, cite economic hardship"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Some traders and shop owners in the Obio\/Akpor area of Rivers on Saturday opened for business in defiance of the state government\u2019s no-movement directive during the local government council elections.\n<\/p>\n<p>They cited economic hardship and survival concerns as reasons for opening their businesses despite the ban.\n<\/p>\n<p>The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Rivers Government had earlier declared a 12-hour no-movement order across the state\u2019s 23 Local Government Areas (LGA).\n<\/p>\n<p>The restriction is intended to ensure the smooth conduct of elections to fill chairmanship and councillorship positions across the LGAs.\n<\/p>\n<p>Despite the order, NAN observed that some shops and roadside stalls were open, with traders attending to customers while the election was underway.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Chinedu Okoro, a provision store owner at Woji Ward 6, told NAN that although he was aware of the directive, he had no choice but to open his shop.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have three children and a sick mother to take care of. If I don\u2019t sell today, we won\u2019t eat. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe government should understand that not everyone can afford to stay indoors without income,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nSimilarly, Mrs Comfort Brown, who operates a food stall, said she resumed business early on Saturday morning to avoid losing her perishable goods.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI bought vegetables and meat yesterday before I was told of the restriction.
